Actually, we have had the time. As I said elsewhere, the earliest known specimens of H. sapiens are an anatomical composite between modern humans (ie us) and H. erectus/ergaster.

That said, H. sapiens, and H. erectus/ergaster are both 100% ape. Our descendants will also be... just as they'll also be mammals.
