There isn't that much to block line of sight in space and the communication is likely more consistent than alternative methods. Do you have an article link? Lasers however do still spread and lose effectiveness. I read an article once on laser spread between here and the moon. Something that started out as small as a pin head was a mile wide by the time it reached our moon.
