An assault rifle is a weapon that shoots full auto and 3 round bursts. An assault "weapon" is a term coined by the media to describe weapons that are similar to, but not equal to assault rifles. They haven't been modified to only function as semi auto, they are manufactured that way. You could modify them to function fully automatic with some know-how but that's illegal and not just anyone knows how to do it.
