Well it's definitely crucial to put your own stamp/flavor on whatever you do, but I wouldn't stress too much about coming up with a 100% unique idea since that's impossible. Figure out exactly what you wanna do, and then see what other people are doing. Find out what's popular. Decide who your audience should be. And then just adapt what other people are doing already to fit your own style ya know what I'm saying? Like take sales for example. All salesmen know and use the same basic techniques, but they add their own style. Same with comedians, firefighters, hell any profession. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious but I hope it helps.
