No, instant messaging (IM) is different. IM is like AOL IM, Yahoo! Messenger, etc. That's more like real-time chat, and it started on PCs, then became available on some phones. You need an account and a username, and you can sign in or sign out.
Text Messaging (SMS) is specific to phones. If you have a phone, you can receive any text message sent to your phone number.
