I use Cingular GSM service. I don't like most of their phones, and Cingular's phones all seem to use a frequency of 850. Does anyone know if I can use other gsm phones (which arent 850) with my service? I know they have to be unlocked. But would it even work?

In California or NYC area, yes. Cingular's network is GSM 1900 in those areas.

In most other areas, no. You might be able to roam on T-Mobile or AT&T, but you would not be on Cingular's network, so many features would not be available. In those areas, Cingular only has 850 MHz spectrum, so GSM 1900 is not an option for them.

Your phone has to cover your carrier's band. Has nothing to do with unlocking. Check this website for a list of phones that can be used with your carrier.

You basically stuck with the phones your carrier wants to carry.
