A recent item in GSM vs. CDMA
Cingular's claimed the least dropped calls. Now T-Mobile claims the least dropped calls according to a different survey.
It's starting to look like this has something to do with GSM technology.
For CDMA, yes you do have a much better chance of connecting the first time you try. So for advantages and disadvantages we see this.
GSM- Calls drop less.
CSMA- Calls connect on the first try more often.
...
and btw, there's a call drop problem in Cingular's W-CDMA network 😳
...
W-CDMA is not actually based on CDMA as the name implies... its based on GSM.... 😳
...
So you are saying that W-CDMA uses Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) rather than Code Division Multiplexing (CDM)?
Cuz GSM isn't a multiplexing technique but a standard based on TDMA
...
Both of you are partially correct, WCDMA uses the GSM data core to be compatible with existing GSM networks and a CDMA type air interface over a 5mhz channel. It is not identical to CDMA 1XRTT/EVDO but merely similar.
Dropped calls are not the big issue for any of the carriers that they once were. I have had Cingular, US Cellular, Sprint and Verizon. None had dropped call issues. These network people are professionals who run great networks no matter who they work for.
Neither technology is more likely to drop a call than the other if the network is configured properly and the handset is of decent quality.

I've lost way more calls on GSM than CDMA.
...
If you actually look at the different studies that the carriers point to, almost all carriers in almost all areas have less than 2% of calls dropped with most being under 1%... I think it simply isn't a big problem for anyone these days.

Think about it this way - remember the old way we used to watch TV? Through the Antana right? Well, the service was pretty reliable but the picture was pretty bad and would come and go, now most people use digital cable/satelite. The picture quality is AWSOME, but cable/saletlite goes out from time to time because it isnt hard lined. Also, it depends on the phone! Hope this helps!
...
1) Cable is hardlined.
2) Broadcast television used to go out as frequently as cable.
3) You must be drunk.
4) Or four years old.
5) Hope this helps!

My favorite part of the whole dropped calls argument is that the same survey that T-Mobile uses to prove their lowest dropped calls claim rates them lower than Verizon in nearly everything else. Why site information from a survey in which you only won a couple areas?
