The new ATT phones

To Rich or whoever:

I am noticing alot of the new phones from att are GSM 1900. Will the "New Cingular" be only 1900 GSM or will they keep ATT 850 GSM?

The new cingular will be a mix of 1900 and 850...the more spectrum, the merrier. There is no chance of them getting rid of 850, especially with all the hype surrounding it and supposed benefits of it. All phones sold in the U.S. have 1900 because that is the basic PCS standard (850 GSM came after 1900 GSM).

The Motorola MPx200 is the only 1900-only phone in AT&T Wireless' current lineup. The rest all support GSM 850 as well.

AT&T Wireless and Cingular both use both bands. The new Cingular will continue using both bands. The reason is that they own major spectrum licenses in both bands. To not use half of that spectrum would be letting a multi-billion-dollar asset go to waste.

1900-only phones have already been phased out by both companies (except the MPx200). All future models for both companies, and post-merger, will support both bands.
