WI-MAX

ive been hearing alot about WI-MAX and that its not very good for the cell industry. does anyone have any info on this?

Yes, Sprint PCS owns the 2.6Ghz frequency and will role this out in about 4-5 years, unless they see a need to launch it sooner.

Basically, it's a long-range version of Wi-Fi. Another way to think of it is wireless DSL.

It is potentially bad for the cell industry. Or an opportunity... 😉

With the new, high-speed 3G networks coming out, the cell phone carriers are positioning themselves as broadband providers, competing eventually with DSL and cable modems.

As speeds increase rapidly - currently on a curve much faster than wired alternatives - they will eventually be positioned to offer even more. They could compete not only with landline phone companies, but also cable and TV broadcasters.
