i've gotten an unusual request from a customer, and i hope someone out there can help... i'm looking for a 3G phone that can be used in Japan. ideally i need something that's unlocked so a T-Mobile customer can use it when they travel. if i understand correctly, japan uses WCDMA, so i'm not sure if what i'm asking is correct or possible. help???

thanks in advance!!!

Japan is on the GSM network. Just get your customer a triband or a world phone. That will be sufficient. I went on T-Mobile's site.. and it doesn't say which frequency Japan is, but it is in fact GSM. So to be safe, i would just sell him a quad band world phone. 😁

European 3G handsets will work in Japan, in fact Vodafone 3G handsets will work on Vodafone's Japanese network. The Sony Ericsson V800 would be a good choice.

Japan does not utilise a 2.5G GSM network, hence the reason roaming was imposisble for so long, so a GSM handset will be a very nice doorstopper in Japan.

NO!! There is no GSM service in Japan! I can vouch from personal experience!

There is WCDMA 2100, but I'm not sure what options a US-based person would have. (Europeans have options for 3G roaming, but I'm not sure that's wise (or even possible) without a European address.)

You might look into companies that offer rental phones for use in Japan.

t-mobile usa will offer the customer a rental 3g when he goes over to japan or even korea. so it doesnt matter what model you sell him here locked or unlocked.
