Number portability is not good for carriers. They spent years fighting it tooth and nail, and persuaded the FCC to push back the deadline three times.
It's not profitable for carriers. Each carrier spent around $50 million just to support it, and it brings in no additional revenue. There are portability fees here and there, but they just barely cover costs.
In addition, it will lead to increased churn - meaning more people switching. That's bad for carriers. It already costs carriers about $400 to acquire each new customer - now it may cost more, and there will be more of it.
And more phones being sold is also bad for carriers. Most phones are sold at a loss. Manufacturers are the only players who benefit there.
