Stop limiting November 24th LNP to just cell phones, on that day, one will be able to transfer their cell phone number to a landline carrier, as well as cell phone to cell phone carrier...

Something like this is the current buzz on Cable TV news channels. On the positive side, people may soon be able to use just one phone number for both land line and wireless phones.

Some land line providers are fighting this concept. They see it as a major loss of funding and are threatening legal action to try and prevent it. Yet this is a good answer to the growing problem of wireless carriers running out phone numbers. This is a great solution to that problem.

A friend of mine, who is a telemarketing manager states: "This opens the door for telephone solicitors, completing lifting away previous legal barriers that once protected cell phones from solicitors. If the same number serves as both land line and wireless than it is no ...

wb, you are right about possible implications concerning telemarketers. Porting landline numbers to wireless carriers could most definitely crumble that delicate barrier keeping telemarketers from dialing cell #'s. However, hopefully the whole Federal DNC list concept will go through and help with this potential problem.

And Raven, just to make sure you have it straight, you will not be able to port an existing cellphone number to a landline. It is the other way around: cellphone to cellphone and landline to cellphone will be allowed only. The FCC does not recognize enough of a demand for it.

I hope all of you realize that LnP is only launching for the 100 biggest markets in the country on 11/24. For the rest of the world it is May 24. Just some inside info.

qagirl, the FCC formally stated that it does not recognize enough of a demand to justify the porting of cellphone numbers to landlines. This is as of November 24th, anyway. Maybe sometime in the near future they will decide to do that, but for now it will not be allowed.

What's this? Straight from fcc.gov

"In the Matter of Sprint Petition for Declaratory Ruling, Obligation of Incumbent LECs to Load Numbering Resources Lawfully Acquired and to Honor Routing and Rating Points Designated by Interconnecting Carriers, Sprint Petition for Declaratory Ruling, CC Docket No. 01-92 (filed July 18, 2002). give wireless service providers an unfair competitive advantage over wireline carriers. They contend that while this may facilitate widespread wireline-to-wireless porting, wireless-to-wireline porting can only occur in cases where

"wireless-to-wireline porting can only occur in cases where the wireless customer is physically located in the wireline rate center associated with the phone number. If the customer’s physical location is outside the rate center associated with the number, porting the number to a wireline telephone at the customer’s location could result in calls to and from that number being rated as toll calls. As a result, the LECs assert, they are effectively precluded from offering wireless-to-wireline porting to those wireless subscribers who are not located in the wireline rate center associated with their wireless numbers."

Exactly, thanks Raven!

You are only prohibited when the rate centers do not match. (Which will be most of the time)....

No, the FCC stated they do not see much of a demand to lift restricting the porting only if the ll and cell carrier have switches in the same local area. You CAN port from cell to ll but the number of customers eligible to do this is very small, and yes, there is not a lot of demand for it. So no, the FCC will not clarify the porting rules in this instance. It does not mean you cannot port.

Thank you for that clarification, Raven and qagirl; however, seeing as how I never said that they CAN'T do it, I don't understand how this makes what I said untrue or incorrect. The fact that it is possible to do doesn't mean that the FCC will allow it (in most cases, anyway). Just like you said yourself qagirl, the fact remains that there are VERY few eligible candidates for this type of porting; hence, the FCC will not allow it most of the time. So basically that means that as wireless consultants, we shouldn't tell people that this will be an option for them, because 90% of the time, it won't be. That's why I said they won't allow it, because most of the time, they simply won't. Not enough demand, and not economically feasible. Just like ...
