I HEAR RUMORS FROM T-MOBILE AGENT REPS THAT T-MOBILE PHONES CAN HOOK TO AT&T & CINGULAR TOWERS WHEN OUTSIDE OF THEIR ORIGINAL COVERAGE FOOTPRINT. IS THIS TRUE OR ARE THESE GUYS MISREPIN?

T-Mobile operates on GSM, Cingular and ATTWS also have GSM networks, which would enable all GSM equip to operate on any GSM tower in the area. Depending on what frequency the equipment is programmed to operate on, your GSM phone may work in Europe and Asia as well. You can take your GSM equipment (with your phone number) to another carrier if you are able to get the phone unlocked. You would just need to buy a SIM card from your new carrier.

Yes, any GSM outfit claims it can hook up with anyone else- so what? If they don't have an agreement with the GSM provider in that area than either no hook up occurs or you pay up the hilt.

In the past T-Mobile has been generous about unlocking their cell phones, for their customers. AT&T has never been that user friendly. So you can, technically speaking, put the competitor's sim chip in your phone and it will work. There are two things to be aware of. If the phone is not compatible with a competitors' products they won't bother. (Which is kind of silly as only batteries really tend to be different.) If the sales rep you are talking to is more concerned about a commission than a customer than that person will refuse to work with y...

T mobile and AT&T worked out roaming agreements last year though. They can each use the others network with out costing thier customers roaming fees. This was reported here at this website on the front as news.
