Is your signal analog or marginal digital? If it's the latter, perhaps an all-digital phone may work out better than a tri-mode. Since the signal doesn't get split through a combiner (before the receivers), there is less internal loss in theory.
If you choose to use an amplifier/repeater, make sure to get it cleared through Verizon Wireless and the FCC to rebroadcast the spectrum.
