We watched a video in my training class back in 2009, it was like 60 mins or 20/20 or something and they were talking about applications that could remotely turn on the camera, microphone, etc without the user knowing. They said they did have to have physical possesion of the device to setup the application though. Some symptoms I remember are

Phone getting hot when not in use.

Background noise while on a call

Data overage (this information is all transmitted via data so your usage would be much higher than normal.

Phone won't turn off - Power button is disabled

Battery life sucks

Backlight randomly coming on when not in use

Google "Remote Cell Spy software" and alot of things will come up. I feel that this will definitley become a huge security concern that carriers and phone manufacturers will need to address in the coming years.
