I have owned both, the Kindle is a great device and is ideal for readers. Eventhough the iPod Touch has a Kindle app, reading for a prolonged time on a small LCD screen will strain her eyes.

The Kindle (and other e-book readers) use a new technology called e-ink. The point of e-ink is to provide the reader the look of reading off paper without hurting their eyes.

All that having been said, Barnes and Nobles is coming out with an amazing e-book reader called the Nook. It is an e-book reader with an LCD touch panel on the bottom. It has a great feature that if you were to both own a Nook you can share e-books amongst each other, the Kindle does not do this.
