Actually they are above you.

Not because they are a doctor, or a lawyer but because they are a customer.

Without that doctor being a paying customer and the countless of other customers paying their bill you would be without a job. So I am sorry to report they are above you.

Here's the issue though. Them being a customer does not mean:

-they know more about how their plan works than the rep does.
-They know more about company policy and procedure than the rep does
-they have the right to belittle a CSR
-they can Demand everything under the sun for free.

That's the issue. Yes, customers are important, but I don't walk into a doctor's office and treat them like dirt because "without me paying to see you, you wouldn't have a job." Nor do I tell them how to do their job because "it's my body, and I went online to freemedicaladvice. cn and they said this, so you telling me anything differently means you're trying to rip me off."

That's the breakdown. They expect respect at their jobs, and they expect...

The difference is the customer you are describing is an absolute d-bag. And some people act like that. Can we have an attitude with that customer and treat them like crap right back? Nope.

You don't walk into a doctor's office and belittle the doctor...but you could.
...

Dec 8, 2009, 4:56 PM
No I couldn't because I would be told to leave, and escorted by security if need be. at the very least, he would refuse to see me.

If a phone salesman tells a customer to leave, they are always questioned about it by their superiors, and the impact on their community reputation is much greater.

Also, that customer can call and complain to tmobile/verizon/att/whatever and the corp could come down on the salesperson since they ALWAYS take the customer's side.

If a doctor refuses service to a dbag=1 lost customer (and maybe his friends)

If a sales rep refuses service to a dbag=many lost customers, possible lost job, people assume he was in the wrong.

Also, the number of dbags in phone stores is a lot higher than the number of db...

Physicians dismiss patients all the time. You'd be amazed how many people treat them just like they treat cell phone reps. Some people are just idiots, no matter who they're speaking with.

For what it is worth, I treat my doctor like dirt. But, he's been a good friend since 3rd grade and I know for a fact he deserves it.

The main problem with your argument (or link to someone else's point) is that the customer can not be fired for treating you like crap. You however can be fired for treaitng the customer like crap. If you want to keep your job you have to have respect for someone even if they are cursing you out for not giving them a free phone.

the main problem with your argument is that you failed to realize that my post was a rant, not an actual conversation that went on with a customer. you also failed to realize that every person who works in customer service already knows that they can be fired for treating customers like crap, which is why we smile, and continue to be respectful, even though it is not returned.

we do this when we are dealing with customers. last time i checked, there was no rule that said we cannot bad mouth customers on a forum.

That is not correct. There was a man who would come into the mall and constantly harass the girls i work with. He had service with us, but my manager finally got fed up and "fired" him. Told the guy never to come back.

My job description does not include "verbal punching bag". No way in hell would I get fired if a customer came to me screaming and cursing and I asked him/ her to leave. My job requires me to be a professional, I mean, I can't scream and curse back at him.

So either: A. you enjoy playing devil's advocate in these types of situations. B. You've never had a customer scream and curse at you. or C. You're just afraid of your boss.

I have been screamed at by plenty of customers but instead of fueling their rage I like to de-esculate the situation and possibly win the customer over.

You can ask the customer to leave but what if they so say no, then what?

You can't raise your voice, use foul language or hit them so you are up a creek.

Sadly in the customer service field one asset of your postition is a verbal punching bag. Sucks but its true.

Dec 24, 2009, 5:09 PM
if they say no, you call the police/mall security.

If they hit you, you can hit them back. You can also raise your voice if they are causing a disturbance.

At my old store, we had a sign right behind the register that said we reserved the right to refuse service.

Just because you are in customer service and/or retail dose not mean you have a target on your back. You can call security. Wait on the next person. You can do a lot, but you must refrain from stooping to their level. Because, really, who is in charge??

the last part is a loosely made point

I dont act like a douche around people that make less money than myself but the notion that someone is not better than someone else is a stupid one. our lives are measured by only a few things and income is a major yardstick in the equation

I find that hard to believe. I wish it wasn't such a materialistic world where we were not judged by the money we make, the kind of car we drive or the clothes that we wear, but it is.

I have read on this forum enough posts of people making fun of their customer's lack of education (not just ignorance) and know that there are many more on here that sees someone in shabby clothes or driving a car that smokes with plastic for a rear window, or holding a "WILL WORK FOR FOOD" sign, and passes judgement. Good, bad or ugly, its human nature.

We just always hate it when someone passes the same judgement down on us.

This post was started by a spoil brat, one who THINKS someone thinks theyre higher than her because of their profession. And you know what, because of their profession, their cell phone is more important to them. Her job is customer service, not being a whiny little troll on phonescoop.

Instead of threatening malice on their accounts which IS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW, company policies, and probably violates a couple state and municipal laws as well, MAYBE she should grow the hell up and act like her job is in customer service.

Because you know what, if theyre doing their job, whatever job that may be, theyre already a better person than her because she refuses to do hers.
