Language Barrier

I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but I'm amazed at how people get upset because nobody speaks spanish in the store.

We have a rep that leaves at 4:30pm and after that everyone speaks english. This country has spoiled the spanish speakers so bad they go places and expect someone to speak spanish.

What about all the other people that speak different langos, do you see Arabic people coming into the stores getting mad because they cannot communicate. If you're going to make exceptions for one culture do it for everyone else.

or learn english!! you live in america, where english was the common language until all the hispanics and mexicans started coming and people would learn spanish to conduct business with them. yes it may be common place now in the south for people to speak both, but the more north you go, the less common. its our national language, learn it, love it and get over yourself.

It's the same group of people that believe illegal immigration is not wrong. For some reason, people come to the "Land of Opportunity and Freedom", but get pissy when they are scoffed for not following our /laws/ and custom's and such. As stated, it's America, learn our language. Go to Germany and get all pissy when they dont have Spanish speakers, see the reception you get.

The way I see it there are certain professions where it is your responsibility to learn spanish and other languages in order to assist people. Basically these professions would be a police officer, a firfighter and an EMT. When you are trying to save peoples lives you need to understand them. Everything else it's their responsibility to learn English if you don't want to speak English then we shouldn't have to help you with anything.

🀣 It's funny that you say speaking another lango gets you a better job, I have plenty of bilingual friends who are unemployeed or doesn't have the best job.I admit being bilingual does have it advantages, it might get you few cents or a dollar raise but not much I rather have my education before anything. Well, if you want to chat about grammar...

Since it has a lot of definitions, I will do only the ones that apply.

gramΓƒβ€šΓ‚Β·mar

The system of rules implicit in a language, viewed as a mechanism for generating all sentences possible in that language.

The system of inflections, syntax, and word formation of a language.

Writing or speech judged with regard to such a set of rules.

Now, since punctuation, at least in this usage, would be part of that system of inflections, and word formation, and it was a sentence (generally speaking) and you were attempting to use the English language.

I would have to say that since you didn't use punctuation, then your statement of your sentence being grammatically correct would be...

You seem to be forgetting that while they don't speak Enlgish they most certainly do business in US $, not Pesos...

Worst case scenario, you lose business that you didn't have anyway...

But, that business is going to walk across the store or the street and give those US $ to a company and rep who can speak a little bit of Spanish.

You may not like it, but it's reality. It's really not much different than older generations who b!7ch about computers. You can fight it all you want, but you only hurt yourself in the process. If you invest just a little bit of time to learn just basic skills, you can meet 90% of them part way.

So he altogether tell customers he doesn't speak spanish because 99% of the time he ends up with a headache. My point again if no-one speaks Spanish there's no need to get mad, it's not like this company pays you more if you're bilingual. If I found a free spanish class I would apply myself, but until then πŸ™„ . Some say it's better for business which is true, but why won't they ...

Here, at least, our Spanish speaking customers come in because their friends or family did before and have referred them. We get traffic because of referrels that we try to take care of them without taking advantage.

As for the customers themselves, language issues aside, I much prefer the average Spanish speaking customer. They are generally far more polite, patient, understanding... and also less greedy and expecting of everything "for free." They are far less likely to complain over petty stuff than the average American, in my experience. That could just be a regional or local thing, though.

Or are you always like this?

Whatever the case may be, the company that you work for does not give two farts about people "not speaking the language". They want to go out of their way to appeal to this population. You know why? A lot of ESL people don't have cell phones yet. The English First!!! crowd is pretty much saturated - the only way one of the big companies gains one of those folks is by taking them away from a competitor.

Also, as noted elsewhere, people on their first cell phone tend to have less of a sense of entitlement than people on their 5th.

This horse has been beaten to death multiple times. Here's the skinny as I see it.

Should a business employ people that are bilingual? That depends. If you are in an area that has alot of Spanish/Mexican (and yeah, there is a BIG difference between Spanish, and Mexican. Ask someone from Spain if they talk the same language, and most of the time they'll get offended.) then yeah, it would be stupid of your business NOT to have a Spanish speaking person to assist them. They are NOT required to learn English. It's not a law. If a business operates in an area dense with Spanish./Mexican speaking people then it's retarded if they do not offer that service.

As for the whinging about the fake national language, all I have to say is... perhaps that is part of the reason why your namesake company is losing a million customers a quarter. The company I work at values Spanish-speaking customers so much that we have a dedicated customer service queue for them, and interpreters readily available for situations that queue can't handle. Then again, when you work for a Sprint call center, there's a better than even chance that *you* don't speak English as a first language, so that may be the real underlying issue. My view, if you are going to go to a foreign country, to live there or whatever, learn the freakin pro-dominant language. And I mean that toward everybody traveling to a foreign place.

When my mother came to the U.S.of A, she learned how to speak English. When my Dad went to go live and work in Germany, he learned 3 different Dutch dialects.
