Do you sell specific words or how does that work? I noticed words are now double underlined and green with a pop up ad.

We're doing a trial run of text link ads. We're running them only in certain parts of the site.

We'd appreciate feedback. In particular, specific feedback, (not just "all ads suck", etc. 😉 )

In general I'm not a fan of this type of intrusive advertising. At least in this case they are color coded and your site doesn't allow one to hide links anyways so they are rather obvious. If you don't mouse over they don't pop up unlike some other sites where simply scrolling brings them up. All in all they don't bother me so much. In fact, I've moused over just to see what they were advertising. All In One brought up the HP 3900 series printers so they seem spot on. One problem, I was clicking on the text trying to figure out what it was on the first post and it didn't bring up a new window. Should it have?

I think they are too big. If I happen to run my mouse over it, or after clicking a link and it happens to land on the text link it pops us and it blocks a large part of what I'm trying to read. More of an annoyance, really.

It wouldn't be THAT troublesome if you posted links to only the carriers, when the carrier's name was mentioned. But the word "phone" appears in about one in five posts, and it's a little annoying to keep from going to the AT&T website.

Far be it for me to begrudge a new way to pull in some well earned cash - you guys work hard on this site, and it's a resource that's more than earned it's reputation - but I'm really not a fan. Text link ads are very annoying, and can be potentially browser disabling*. The lack of text ads is a big reason I like Phonescoop vs PhoneArea or GSMarena (though the layout & overal format play no small part in that opinion as well.

I say that if it's something that makes a big difference to the bottom line, go ahead & do it. It's a matter preference to us (I can't imagine anyone being in favor of them), but it's your livihood (or part of it, at least).

🙂

So... at the moment, the trial is only on forum pages. We are considering other parts of the site.

Are there some pages / sections that you would find more acceptable than others for this kind of ad?

Also, we limit them to a certain max. number per page (the limit is very loew right now.) There are other ways we can tailor them.

Also, you can click the little "?" on any of these ads and there's an option to opt out of them.

I'd be interested in feedback on these ideas.

Story: There I was, going to my phone site trying to read some posts and look up some stuff... and all the sudden I saw some green text things.. Ok that's weird I thought, then my mouse scrolled over one of them. I then got some stupid pop up video thing that shut down my browser.
Ok, so I open it back up and try again... I scroll over another green text of death... same story. I get froze. (This work computer is old, the other work computer kicks me out of the site because it's got some sort of web protection thing)
Ok I thought, I'll just pretend my mouse is an acutal mouse and it has to navigat the page like a maze.

I hate the new ads, they are annoying and screw up both my work computers rendering this site useless. Are the google...

Advertisers select keywords for their ads, but it's all automatic, and handled by the ad company. Google ads work the same way. We don't interact with any advertisers directly.

Me: Hey AdScoop Man,
How did you find such an annoying way of advertisment?
AdScoop Man: Well Drunk it was easy, I just thought, you know... people go on this site to read what other people say. I've already filled the top and sides of the page... and they don't seem to be reading it.. How about I put popups in the text that the ACTUALLY READ
Me: Wow that's amazing! Is there no other way to be more annoying with ads and still get paid to do it?
AdScoop Man: Young Drunk, ha ha ha you are too childish to know the ways of money/advertisment
Me: Adscoop Man you are the greatest!

1. Thank you for the feedback.

2. We're running a trial of these ads. That means we haven't made a decision about whether to keep them.

3. They are currently limited to forum pages only.

4. They are limited to one or two per page, and are highlighted in green, so they are easy to avoid with your mouse. We're specifically trying to make sure it's not like a "maze" to avoid them if you want. You can also disable them.

5. They are supposed to be relevant ads. That's the whole point. Have you really seen male enhancement ads? I've only seen Sprint and AT&T ads so far.

6. If you're using a really old browser like IE6 and that's why it's crashing, you (or your company) needs to upgrade. More and more sites web-wide will stop working...

Yes, I'm using Windows 2000 (horrible machine) and it has the old explorer. I hate this computer. My company is too cheap to get new ones that work, and we can't download anything else on it. I don't mean to hurt feelings but I am trying to voice my opinion and I'm glad I was heard. I'm glad this is only a trial period. I cast my vote for a no on the new advertisement.
Thanks for listening Rich

A majority of people will complain about it at first. Some will threaten to leave if you keep them there. Some that threaten to leave will do it. (very small number) Im willing to bet people started to complain when you put up Google ads too.

Do what makes you money, and keeps the site afloat!

In the words of Jeffrey Gitomer "Sales People are natural born whiners!" So you guys are gonna have it worse than normal. 🙂

Keep up the good work.

Ads. This is an ad-supported site. If it weren't for people seeing the ads, we'd have to charge for this service. Ads are the only way we can provide this site to the public for free.

I don't necessarily mind the ads themselves, but the word phone appears in nearly every post on this site. I'd prefer it if they were connected to words I didn't run into on fifty pages in a row.

Phone is a relevant keyword.

I hear what you're saying, but I'm afraid that one text link ad every 20th page is not how it's supposed to work. It tries to display an ad for at least one keyword per page. The max at the moment is two. It will never display more than two per page, but you should expect up to two per (forum) page.

If you use a more specific keyword like antenna or Sprint, it will often link to that. But in the absence of very specific keywords like that, it must use the next-best relevant keyword, which is often going to be something like phone.

Is when you are trying to highlight a block of text to copy as it automatically kicks up the advertisment. Otherwise I scroll over to take a look on occasion.
