There are a number of companies that rank carriers, but I think more important is that each carrier varies by area (sometimes wildly). So while AT&T might provide the best coverage in City A, Verizon might be better in City B, etc.
And of while coverage is key, there are other important metrics, such as customer service. The interesting thing is that even those aspects can vary by area, especially with companies like Cingular that are the product of relatively recent mergers.
Bottom line: your local area is absolutely a key piece of info for your request.
