Qwest posts modest wireless gains
DENVER-Regional bell operating company Qwest Communications International Inc., which offers wireless services through a mobile virtual network operator agreement with Sprint Corp., said it added 1,000 wireless customers during the second quarter and ended the first half of the year with 744,000 wireless subscribers. The company noted the wireless growth was it first positive quarterly result since the second quarter of 2002.
Wireless average revenue per user also increased 9 percent year-over-year from $46 during the second quarter of 2004 to $50 this year. Qwest attributed the increase to new rate plans and product offerings and the introduction of data services. The company added that 90 percent of gross additions during the second quarter signed up for "high-end national plans" and more than 40 percent signed up for data services.
The strong ARPU growth and modest customer gains combined to boost total wireless revenues 2 percent year-over-year from $128 million during the second quarter of 2004 to $130 million this year. Wireless services accounted for 3.7 percent of Qwest's total service revenues during the second quarter.
