New Territory?

Alltel has coverage in Southern Colo and every state surrounding except Denver and the northern part of the state. Are there any plans to expand coverage to the Metro area? This would be a big market for them.

I would go out on a limb and say the likelihood of Alltel expanding into a major market like Denver is very small. As you are probably aware, Alltel really doesn't own Alltel anymore. Two financial holding companies do. Alltel's money is being held for the 700 Mhz auction that is scheduled to take place early in 2008. Now, IF Alltel wins some frequency space, then there is a chance. What will be interesting is to see what will happen to Alltel if they are unsuccessful at securing the new frequencies. I've been told how wrong I am several times, and I expect to be told that again, but if Alltel is not successful at the auction, I would tell you Verizon will buy 'em out. End of story.

If they didn't' buy them before why would they then? What else will alltel offer them that they didn't' before they were bought few months back? nothing. The investors have to make alltel a greater company to be bought and they will.

To answer your question I believe alltel is in CO only because of the buyout of western wireless.

There is a lot of posturing going on right now, denials running rampant, and many "no comments" thrown in for good measure. The fact is, so many of the small fish are but a memory in this cellular stew, and ultimately, I expect there to only be a handful of players after all is said and done. Alltel is so ripe for a takeover, especially if they walk away with nothing at the auction, I can just feel it. Also, just like several cellphone manufacturers agreeing to go with the micro USB connection on their phones, I also expect, in time, that whenever whoever is left to offer service, we will ALL be using GSM. It's not a matter of IF anymore, it's a matter of WHEN. If you live in the United States and you need cellular service TODAY, CDMA w...

I was almost with you till you said everyone will be using GSM. Then you went to hell there. GSM has no 3G option why would they go to it. GSM carriers are moving to WCDMA for 3g and in the future voice to. Most of the rest of the world? over 100 countires use CDMA now and its expanding rapidly. But soon allot of the world will be using CDMA and we will be on wimax and LTE which is a form of WCDMA.

also alltel is not ripe for a take opver they already have been bought by investors and it has not be finalized yet. They need to do something to make it more interesting to potential buyers. Why you ask? Because no one wanted to by them when the investors did!

Like I said, wom, there's a lot of posturing going on. The financial holding companies are NOT going into the cellular business. Alltel does NOT have control of their company any longer. Further, IF they are unsuccessful at the auction next winter, which could happen, they'll be in a worse position for future dealings than they are now. Seems reasonable that they will be bought out.

The other thing...with so much of the world proliferating with CDMA...WHERE??? I have people coming to me all the time asking me if I have a phone that will work where they live. Where they live is overseas, and they use the SIM cards! I have to tell you something. I was over in Scotland a little more than a year ago. Their wireless system in the UK ...

next couple of years att will be completely WCDMA. I have already posted an article on CDMA in other countires in the verizon forum. Its in about 105 countries and over 200 providers world wide. GSM is done there is no more it can grow. Yes WCDMA takes parts of GSM and CDMA.

Investers get into any business that they can make money. ANd even if they wanted out of alltel they need to sell to someone. No one wantst o buy them right now or they would have put in bids which none did.

GSM is not the future.

WCDMA (also called UMTS) and LTE and Wimax are. They are completely and totally separate from GSM. Gsm is older then CDMA worldwide and is inefficient spectrum wise. CDMA is the actual future, just a different form. Because all the GSM carriers are adopting CDMA into their 3 and 4g plans.

No, we will not all be using GSM. We may however all start using WCDMA (gsm carriers upgrade path). And LTE.

GSM is inferior to CDMA and no carrier will be going from cdma straight to GSM. There is a company called Peiker creating a chip that allows cdma2000 and wcdma. They are working with Qualcomm on this.
