Question about Alltel contract

I have been an Alltel customer for almost 5 years. My contract was supposed to be renewed in November of 2006, but it mistakenly was not. I was not informed of this until September 2007, and was then offered another 2 year contract, to which I agreed. I got a new phone at that time. My brother, who is on my Family Plan, did not get a new phone at that time...in fact he did not get a new phone until July 2008. When I checked my Alltel account this morning, I saw my renewal date as May 2009, whereas my brother's is not until March 2010. I am so confused. I'm looking to either switch onto my in-laws US Cellular Family Plan or join Verizon when my contract is up, but is that in May of this year, or will I need to wait until next March? A...

Both. Yes, you are sharing a plan together, but each phone has there own contract. That is why you are seeing two separate dates. Hope that helps, and out of curiosity, why do you want to leave Alltel for US Cellular or Verizon?

Thanks!

And it's not that I WANT to leave Alltel, but my phone bill will be cut in half if I get added to the in-laws US Cellular plan. And if I understand correctly, Verizon will be buying out my Alltel contract in a few months. I'm really not impressed with what I've heard about Verizon from some friends of mine that are customers. I wish I could just keep Alltel.

If you are under contract with Alltel when the Verizon merger takes effect in your area, you will grandfathered in with the same plan, device, and contract end date. Basically, nothing will change. If you decide to stay with Alltel, upgrade when you are eligible and you're set for another two years 🙂 I hope you decide to stay, even after Verizon takes over and Alltel is gone as a brand, you'll still have great service with your Alltel phone!

I was thinking about doing exactly that...upgrading now with a new Alltel handset and staying with my plan for another two years. However, my understanding is that after Verizon takes over, if you are currently an Alltel customer and you're eligible to upgrade after the merger, you're somewhat forced into a Verizon plan AND phone. I am eligible to upgrade now (have been for over a month) and I see nothing among the non-Smartphones on Alltel's service that interests me. My eye is on Verizon's Samsung U810 Renown, not because of the GSM capability necessarily (a very nice feature), but having held and used it for a test call, it's a fine piece of equipment. Someone here on the forum suggested I buy a Renown at full retail and just activate...

If it has an ESN similar to the devices Alltel offers, then most reps won't know the difference... but keep in mind the ONLY feature you'll be able to use on that phone once you activate it with Alltel is voice calling. That means no text, no web, no nav, NOTHING except voice calls. It'll basically reduce your phone to an ultra-basic model.

Guess what? That's all I do use it for! The only thing I like to do every now and then is download a ringtone, and even that is not that big a deal. Will I still be able to do that much?

Nope. You won't be able to access Alltel's data services to browse the ringtones they offer, and Alltel doesn't allow ringtones from third-party sources.

You can get 3rd party ring tones with a Blackberry on an Alltel data plan! I do it all the time through Tuneusin.com and a few other sites. It is the standard phones you can't anymore.

Well, if I'm going to run into that kind of rigidity, even though I really do expect to just use the Renown for talking only, I may just wait until my Alltel contract runs out the end of May and then re-up with Verizon. That way, I can get the phone a little cheaper. If Alltel had something comparable to this phone in their line, I'd upgrade today and stay with the Alltel plan. I guess I'll just have to decide whether the ancillary features are important enough to have. If not, I'll stick with Plan A.

I was not aware of that, but it does make sense. I think I will do exactly that...this way I can keep Alltel, and I won't end up leaving my brother alone in the contract. Thank you so much for your help! 😁
