WiDEN is deployed at sites where NEXTEL has contiguous channels at a single site (2 or more 25 KHz channels right next to each other) that allows for additional bandwidth vs. a single 25 KHz channel that they currently have at most sites. Like EDGE and GPRS, WiDEN is capable of faster speeds due to the wider bandwidth.

As far as deployment...your guess is as good as mine. They kept the 6:1 vocoder deployment pretty quiet to the general public and will do the same with WiDEN until they want to sell the faster speeds for more $!
