I'm not from Cali, but I can tell you our experience of Nextel here in Michigan. I have lots of friends with Nextel, and what I'm finding out is this: 1. The "two-way" actually works about HALF the time, if not less; and 2. I would seriously estimate about 1 out of 3 times I try to call my friends who have Nextel, the call will actually ring on their end. There is NO explanation for this, seeing as they claim to have had perfect signal the entire time I was trying to reach them. One last thing about Nextel is the fact that, also while maintaining a PERFECT signal, drop about 50% of phone conversations that are at least 5 minutes. Once again, there is NO explanation for this. Hope this can help!

Hmmm, your a Cingular guy and you have Nextel here in Michigan and talking bad about Nextel.
How can any of your input hold any weight?

AS for Nextel, I also like Cingular Guy live here in Michigan (Detroit Metro area) and I have no problems like he has mentioned.
Mind you not all whireless carriers are 100% and some will be better than others depending on what city you live in but personally I enjoy Nextel service.
I also have T-Mobile but mainly use my Nextel for all of my needs and it has been great.

Direct Connect does sometimes do not connect but its not 50% of the time.
Dropped calls are much less frequent than AT&T, T-Mobile, Cingular, and Verizon that I have noticed.
Many of friends use other carriers and out of all of them...

I'm in Michigan currently as well. Moved up from Illinios and haven't switched my Nextel number yet. I have no complaints about my Nextel. They don't yet have the entire state covered, but I can live with the current coverage area. As for what Cingular guy says, we doesn't mention that Nextel is launching new phones later this month, that will have more features, and operate on the network more efficiently than current models. Check the coverage are you have in California. If you can live with it, Get a Nextel. Like the other guy said though, you have 14 days for trail, but only 30 minutes can be put on the phone. See if it will work for you.

I don't know what its like in Michigan or Cali.. but here in Jersey, Verizon and Nextel are really the only two choices. (Sprint, T Mobile, Cingular, AT&T, ect. all have horrible service)

My boss has a Nextel. Here I would have to agree with Cingular Guy- Direct Connect works about 1/2 the time, and calls never seem to go through.. and when they do... they are dropped.

I use Verizon... and even though I can't highly recommend their Push to Talk at this time, their service is exceptional... and I hardly ever drop a call.

My opinion? Go with Verizon.

I am probably coming in way too late on this conversation, but I am in Calif. And everyone I know is on Nextel, the service is great which is why I switched from Sprint. I was with Verizon a while back, horrible service! Go with Nextel it is the best bet!

Try Verizon. Verizon probably the most reliable and widest network in California. Nextel's coverage is very small compared to Verizon's in California (and in most of the country).

Also, Verizon will have more more cost effective local plans compared to Nextel.

Make use of Verizon's 15 day worry free trial period. You cannot go wrong. Get a good quality tri-mode phone. The phone with best RF is Audiovox 9500. But you may want to use the extended battery. You can also try to new Nokia 3589i.

Verizon has many excellent new phones coming for december.

All the best with you pick.

I wouldn't buy another audiovox to save my life. I owned a 9000 and dropped it from my hip to the ground with that flimsy plastic holster clip. Shattered the screen, and after being a Verizon customer for years got the run around replacing it. I'll never go back to Verizon again. I don't care how much coverage area they have, thier personal service stinks.

may depend on where in california you are. i live in sacramento and nextel has very limited service. excessive dead spots and poor voice quality make nextel a terrible choice.... unless the phone and service is provided by your work 😉
