I had Nextel for a couple of years back in 2002-2004. Back then, it was at the top of it's game, before Sprint bought them. I recently converted my Sprint Account to a Nextel account and bought the i580. Yeah, that phone is way behind compared to my Sprint Curve, but I got tired of all the bells and whistles anyway. I don't know one single person with Nextel anymore, so I can't even use the direct connect. I just like the phone and believe it or not, the reception/service is great in my areas compared to Sprints reception. I've noticed that Sprint is keeping the Nextel brand seperate instead of merging like originally planned. So what's next for the brand? Are they ever going to make nicer phones like the i9? Are they going to conti...

I emailed the president of Nextel/IDEN services with my questiones and he replied back. I did mark out his email and d.c. number for his privacy. Looks like Nextel is here to stay for a long time.

Hi Jeremy,

Thank you for taking the time to write and being a Sprint Nextel customer. I will be direct on answering your questions. We have no intentions on shutting down iden and the government is not forcing us to turn over our spectrum or network. We have launched 6 new Nextel phones including our new blackberry over the last 6 months and will continue to launch additional phones throughout the year.

Qchat has only been launched in parts of the US and we don’t have plans at this time launch any further.

Well, that part about "Qchat has only been launched in parts of the US and we don’t have plans at this time launch any further." is certainly interesting info, if it is true.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I have the sneaking suspicion that Sprint is adding Boost Prepaid customers just as fast as they possibly can so that the subscriber numbers on iDEN will get high enough to make the iDEN system attractive to a buyer as soon as the economy starts to turn positive again and credit is easier to obtain. Since they lost so many millions of former Nextel customers, the iDEN network has room to add a few million before it becomes overloaded again (like it was in 2005-2008 time frame).

Congrats on the i580, it is a great phone...

i wouldnt say this is statment is entirly true, q-chat is based on EVDO service. Based on that information, technically when they launch a new EVDO site, (like we have been patiently waiting on since 2006) then they have essentially launched q-chat in that area.

with that said, it is sprint who launches the q-chat phones.
