My son is using the Curve 8350i and when people speak with him they hear their own voices echoing back to them a second or two later. Very annoying. He doesn't hear it at his end.

Has anyone here been told of this problem by people with whom they are speaking?

Echo-back is a fairly common ocurrence, can happen with any of the carriers from time-to-time. It is far more likely to be the network than your son't handset, but read on...

When I have had echo-back on my iDEN handset I only know about it when I hear it on my end. I've never had anyone on the other end complain that THEY hear echo-back.

Years ago I went through a severe echo-back problem that the iDEN NETS engineer eventually traced to a bad circuit board in one of the switches/controllers in one of the tower base-stations in my local area. That was back when Nextel worked very diligently to solve network problems quickly, and they would actually assign a genuine network engineer to your issue and the engineer himself/herself would a...

Thanks cellphonesaretools. However, after I posted yesterday I did some further research and found that this "echo" problem is endemic to the Blackberry Curve 8350i and recognized by Nextel users as well as by RIM. Here are some interesting links:

Yeah, sure sounds like this particular issue is in the 8350i itself. But normally it's either the handset/speaker volume being up too high, or the network itself (or more accurately a malfunctioning part of the network gear).

I hope with this flood of 8350i echo-back complaints that you all get better results from RIM than you will get from Sprint-Nextel's CS.

Good luck!

All you need to do to fix the issue is update the device software. RIM released an update to fix the echoing and teh SMS issue on the device. You can go to Sprint.com/downloads or Blackberry.com for the software.
