Has the reliability of SMS with Nextel improved to the level of other carriers?
Nextel never really had very many SMS problems. Here's the real story: Back in 2004, Nextel had a two week SMS outage in many parts of the country. During that time, messages obviously were not delivered or at least delayed. Since then, Nextel has not had any greater issues than any other wireless provider in that area. Unfortunately, they've gotten a real bad rep over text messages since.
The real problem with Nextel text messaging is that it is an MMS based client rather than SMS. Their SMS is only used for numeric pages and voicemail and has had no big issues to date. The issues that continue to be a pain with their MMS is that it is much slower and less convenient to use than SMS texting on other carriers, although newer handsets are a bit more user friendly by comparison. The older handsets, like the i90, required you to open the web browser first before sending texts. Received texts had to be downloaded (no pop-up messages). Another bad thing was the fact that you couldn't delete the other texter's response when texting back and forth. A real pain.
If I was to get another iDEN phone, I definitely would get one one that has the auto download feature (i880) when receiving messages so that they can be viewed easier.
