what is the range for iden phones anyway. and also when the towers are down if that makes any difference?

When the network is up and running, over 3000 miles. Off-network, about 6 miles. The six mile range, while very short, would allow an underground construction crew to communicate with one another, or rescue workers who are pulling someone out of an abandoned well, or builders who are constructing a warehouse up in the mountains where there are no cell towers.

For individuals, this feature allows you to stay connected inside an indoor shopping mall with your family and friends, that has little or no indoor cellular reception. Also great for staying in touch while riding bikes or hiking up in the mountains, skiing, or hunting and fishing.
