please help me understand
I admit to knowing nothing about iden. My father has a blackberry with his job. It is branded Sprint and his service indicator says 1x ev. He is trying to get two more phones for his supervisors. However his go to guy for the phones said that they are actually using Nextel technology. And that it would be cheaper to switch to Sprint. Now some other person, i beleive there rep said they are not using Nextel technology. I thought that it is more likely that they are using Sprint but looked it up and found out a little about iden and hybrid phones. Now I am very confused. Do you still need a SIM card for a hybrid phone, and then is the iden service only for the walkie-talkie feature? Is iden only walkie-talkie or also voice?

Yes, hybrid phones still have SIM cards, though they are not compatible with traditional Nextel phones. On the hybrids, iDEN is only for the walkie-talkie feature. On traditional Nextel phones, however, iDEN is used for everything - walkie-talkie feature, phone, and data.

Thank you. So his phone is obviously strictly Sprint. But out of curiosity, strictly Nextel phones would say nextel on them right? branded and network connection? And do they even sell strictly Nextel phones any more? Do strictly Nextel phones use cdma or gsm for voice, or iden?

Traditional Nextel phones say Nextel both on the phone and the screen. The hybrid (PowerSource) phones say Nextel on the back of the phone, but say Sprint on the screen. Yes, traditional Nextel phones are still sold today, and these phones use iDEN for voice, as well as walkie-talkie (Direct Connect) and data services.

On my ic502, I changed the greeting banner to display only "Nextel" instead of "SprintNextel."

Nice... The ic902 I had just said "Sprint". After having bad luck with Sprint's network (surprise), I got rid of the phone before I even thought to change the greeting banner. It's OK though, as now I'm back to a phone that just says "Nextel", all the time. 😉

My guess, based on your post, is that your father has the Blackberry 8830. That has a GSM SIM card for international use. The very unimformed reps might have saw that and thought it was a iDEN SIM.
My advice would be for your dad to go somewhere, anywhere else and have better informed reps go over his setup, situation, and needs. It's really sad that reps can't tell the difference between an iDEN and CDMA Blackberry even at a casual glance. It would be better for him to work with reps that know what they are doing.
