Why did they not make the voice work on both iden and cdma on the power source phones. Would this not have greatly incresed coverage area?

A few reasons; 1. Expense. 2. Interference. 3. Battery life issues. 4. Potential Coverage issues. 5. Billing issues.

i think there are laws against that. if that was sprints intention they would have just bought Nextel and shut it down

What laws? The reason why they didn’t do voice because it is very complicated to do.

From what I heard they are gonna phase out the Hybrids. For one they suck butt setting up because of the UBP ENSEMBLE.
Two: Sprint Nextel is already experimenting with CDMA devices that can Direct Connect to iDEN devies.

Why would they phase out the hybrids? They already experimented with that Qchat bridge solution years back but a few months ago, they successfully did a test call from a CDMA device to an IDEN device and vice versa.

Because they are eventually going to shut down the IDEN network and Q-Chat is gonna be the final solution to eventually get everyone on the the CDMA network.

Not true again and another misconception. IDEN is not going to be phased out anytime soon and many people especially the top executives have confirmed that. It will be until at least 2012 until they even do anything about it.

Strategies with IDEN would either have push to talk centric users or sell it to DOD. Either or will be neither confirmed nor denied by me.
The hybrid phones will be another option like Qchat. If Qchat were successful then perhaps the dual modes would be no more.

A Forbes Online article today states that at least one financial/market analyst expects 70% of legacy Nextel subscribers to be migrated to Sprint's CDMA network by the end of 2008. I have no hard info, but my gut feel is that the migration rate is nowhere near that high.
Anyone have any decent info on the actual migration rate of iDEN sub's to Sprint's CDMA side?

Snippet of article and link follows:

"Analyst Gray Powell, in a client note, upgraded the stock to "Outperform" from "Market Perform." The analyst expects the fourth-quarter will show continued subscriber losses.

However, we now believe Sprint is within six months of reaching a sustainable turnaround in subscriber growth and that sentiment cannot go much lower," wrote Powe...

Was that the Wachovia analyst today? If it was, they have no credibility either and their analysts are horrible. He expects a 70% migration rate by 2008. What numbers is he looking at? As of the 2nd quarter 2007, they currently have 15.5 million on IDEN and 850k Power Source devices. The beginning of the merger if I can recall Nextel had 20 million customers and this number is including Boost and Nextel Partners. You can obviously see how many customers they have lost. I just wanted to point out, however, that Boost is actually their only division that is gaining subscribers. Therefore, those numbers are better than what they really should be. Probably do agree with him that the company should turn around but he is asking a lot for the comp...

The other post is actually confusing, but this one is not. Let me say further that Nextel Partners also continues to have a 4% churn rate and having many issues gaining subscribers. In fact, they are losing them. I have some data but it doesn’t go all the way back since the start of the merger but that in the 3rd quarter of 2006 to 2nd quarter of 2007, IDEN has lost almost 2.8 million. Currently, on the Power Source network they have 850k net. Therefore, they are converting about 30%. When the 3rd quarter numbers come out obviously, we will make some adjustments. I am expecting for the 3rd quarter of 2007 to be another horrible quarter for IDEN’s postpaid and probably they will lose around 600k. I am also expecting the Power Source...

well, as you know nextel is superior in terms of their direct connect and sprint is superior in terms of their data services. The hybrid phones are what sprint came up for customers who wants to access the internet thru their phones at the same time use the direct connect. Since hybrid phones actually utilizes 2 networks. If you don't have nextel coverage the phone would automatically switch to sprint.

No more powersource. Sprint is making a new walkie-talkie called hpptt. hpptt will be able to communicate with regular direct connect. hpptt will do better than ready link.

I still say they either need to do away with Ready Link, or at least make the new PTT system backward compatible with it as well.

If the backward compatibility issue isn't feasible, then I say allow current RL customers upgrade to Nextel, or shut off the service, and give them something else in return.

Really? I had heard that the QChat phones would only work with Nextel DC. Do you have any solid info on this?
