Nextel...should I or shouldn't I?

I am currently a At&t wireless customer. My contract expires in December of 2005. I am thinking of leaving them after my contract is up because I really want a phone with a walkie talkie feature so I can be in definite reach of my family. I noticed that Sprint has their version (Ready Link) out but it is new so I think there will be problems...also paying an extra $15 a month to use it is a rip πŸ‘Ώ . Then their is Verizon with their PTT (Push to talk). They only have that one phone (The V60p...Yet ANOTHER version of the tired V60 :rollπŸ™‚ so I am not sure about them either. I really want to give Nextel a try but I keep hearing bad things about their coverage and their customer service. I have good coverage and service now so I don't want t...

Where are you located? What does the coverage map look like for that area? How often will you travel outside the coverage area? Do you know anyone in your area with a nextel to ask how like thier service? I've had Nextel in the St. Louis area and loved it. Now I have it in Michigan. Coverage isn't to bad. I can live with the dead spots. Something else to know, is are you covered by Nextel, or Nextel partners? I've had great customer service with Nextel, but some friends of mine in Central Illinios have mixed emotions with Nextel partners. If you really want to switch, pay the early termination fee and get out now.

What it really comes down to in the long run is this: what do you need? Nextel is has one of the smallest network footprints of any national wireless carrier. Their proprietary technology (IDEN) means you have no ability to pick up another carriers towers in an emergency if you have no Nextel signal. Most carriers are developing a PTT type product, with most slated to have them out long before your contract expires. If you need the ability to use the phone overseas, you can forget Nextel. In short, their are much better options available should you need more than just a walkie talkie. No matter what tricks the phone can do, its all useless without a RELIABLE NETWORK THAT MEETS YOUR NEEDS.

Have you tried any of these? Enough said. Push to wait, not push to talk

Why? Nextel has international products/phones

Why? Sure. Because they have convinced the world that everyone else sucks, yet they are truly the bottom of the barrel. If Nextel is so fantastic, why such a small market share? If I had nothing more than a walkie talkie to hang my hat on, I'd be ashamed. National coverage my eye! Have you compared their coverage maps to any of the other major players? If I were a SPIDER maybe I would enjoy it, but as for being someone who needs my phone available to me, I'd rather have a solid coverage map, and the reliability that affords me. I'd rather have the option of using another carrier's tower if I am in a bad situation in the middle of nowhere. We won't even get into the safety problems they create with police, fire and other RADIO frequencies.

1. Small market share - toughest credit requirements have something to do with this. Also a higher cost product is going to eliminate price-shoppers.

2. "Nothing more than walkie-talkie to hang your hat on = ashamed" πŸ˜• If it sucks so bad, why is every carrier out there desperate to emulate?? Oh, and in reply to your other reply on a different thread, VZ had less than a second latency...IN TESTING!! 🀣 I'll believe it when I see it.

3. Coverage. Nextel covers me where my employees go, metro areas and Interstate corridors mostly. I could care less if they don't have coverage in Podunk, OK. Network built for business users, seems to make sense to go where there's business, not cows.

4.Interference. Don't blame Nextel for a p...

Thanks for the info. BTW I live in New York. I don't know anyone with Nextel so I am just trying to get as many opinions as possible. I really want to wait and see what other phones Nextel will be putting out which is why I am still sticking with what I have. On the Nextel website it says that they have coverage in New York and I beleive I will be covered by Nextel not Nextel partners. Do you know anywhere else I can find info on any new phones they will be getting soon?

Nextel has great coverage in NY. I visited family this summer and had great coverage in PA, NY, NJ and MD. NY is a Nextel state.
People drop info on new phones on this site. They will have a camera phone and Windows Mobile phone out in Q4 of 2004. There are a couple other phones coming out as well. You can email me at southwestcomm@yahoo.com if you like - I am a Nextel dealer.

Thanks for the reply. By the way can you explain the diffrence between Nextel and Nextel partners? From what I am reading in here they seem to be two different companies but under the same umbrella...at least that's the perception I get.

Nextel Partners was formed in 1999 to build out mid and small sized markets. Nextel Comm. gave Nextel Partners licenses in exchange for a 30% stake in the company. Nextel Communications focuses on large markets. Both company's use the exact same technology, Motorola iDEN, and offer the same service. They operate as completely separate company's.

They are seperate companies, but if you are in a partners area, you're not roaming! That is an important point I wanted to make, because Nextel is partnered with another company in the southwest as well, and there is a prepaid company for California and Nevada. If you go to ideninsiders.com and search for the i930, you should find pictures and information. Its one of the new phones do out in Q4 of 04. When you're ready to switch, shop around for the best deal on a phone. A dealer in New York is one way, but there are also reputable companies on line that can discount the phone for you due to the volume of phones they sell.
