Nextel Text Messaging

I'm starting this thread to set the record straight once and for all on Nextel text messaging. I've read with interest in other forums complaints by individuals who've experienced problems with Nextel two-way messaging. First, while you may personally have had problems with Nextel text messaging, so do other people who have other carriers. This fact is verified by the FCC as well as other cell phone forums you'll find on the web. The reason Nextel has a bad rep in this area is because about two years ago or maybe less, they did for about a week to two weeks have problems nationwide with their messaging system. This was in part because they were in the process of making changes and modifications to the system and sometimes when companies do t...

Well you sure set that record straight. But one point I feel your wrong! With over 100 billion yes billion text messages sent between verizon and sprint alone this year I think allot of people do care about it!

A lot of people spend a lot of money on internet pornography too, so what does that prove? That fact doesn't make text messaging in general any faster or any more practical. It's still a super-slow inefficient way to communicate with someone else when simply picking up the phone and calling them is much easier. And again, I say most Nextel users don't care about text messaging that much anyway. I'd rather have more minutes to talk or free calling to more people rather than a great text messaging service and plan.

text messaging is way better! You dont use your minutes and you can talk to as many people at once compared to one on the phone and if you are good you can type fast like me!

With direct connect group connect, you can talk to 20 people nationwide at once, instantly. With Sprint's new group plans, you don't use your minutes, either.

The fastest typing will never beat a 4 second conversation.

Well, it is true that other carriers have problems from time to time, but Nextel consistently has problems delivering its text messages. There is thread after thread on all the major forums about customers complaining because they DO have reliability problems with their messaging service.

Intra-Nextel text messages are normally quick and seem to work fine on a regular basis. The problems exist when sending/receiving messages from any outside carrier. I personally have had Sprint, T-Mobile, Cingular, AT&T, and Alltel service before and text messaging worked perfectly with all carriers no matter who it was sent to. When it comes to Nextel, messages can take hours to make their way though the system and arrive at your phone. I also hav...

What you said about Nextel SMS text messaging NOT showing who sent it is not true. SMS alpha messages do tell who sent them. You are simply unable to reply to them.

The reason Nextel text messages can sometimes take a long time to deliver is because they must be tagged as "high priority", just like an e-mail, in order to be received quickly by the recipient.

Remember, Nextel two-way text messaging uses the internet, and sends like an e-mail, not like a page, as is true on other networks. I have had ZERO problems with sending or receiving text messages using Nextel.

The reason most folks who experience problems using Nextel do is because they don't take time to read and understand the instructions on how it works, otherwise, they wo...

I really hate to say it. Yes, I work for Sextel, and I was working for Nextel pre-merger, AND I loved Nextel service. Voice and PTT is great, data is slow, but it works... but SMS is awful. I have sent messages from my CDMA handset to my wife's iDen handset that she has not received for a week. Then she'll get this message a week later and vice versa. I have definitely received her texts days after she has sent them. The only way I have found to keep this from happening is as soon as you notice a delay occurring, call tech support and have them refresh your text messaging service on the account. Sucks, but it is a solution.

If you don't tag the message as "high priority", it won't deliver immediately. I've never had the first problem using it when I've had to, or not had someone get their message.

Nextel also has the advantage of letting you know if the person you send the message to receives it or not. Not all carriers do that. Plus, you can type up to 500 characters on a Nextel text message, not possible with other carriers.

I think SMS text messaging, while more reliable, is archaic and will go the way of using the Internet as well. Two way browser messaging will simply allow you to do much more communication wise than standard SMS messaging. This is why Nextel never upgraded their SMS paging to two way messaging because using the internet was easier a...

yes because if you personally never had an experience with someone not getting the message obviously refutes the idea that thousands of others do. (kinda reminds me of another debate *looks at the lounge*)

Well, I can't speak for the experience of others. I also read about Yahoo messages. Newer Nextel phones still use the internet to send text messages, but it is no longer necessary to launch the net browser to get there.

Newer phones have the ability to create messages from the contact list or message center. You can use quick notes and quick replies, just like other carriers have. The difference being that when you push "send" to send the completed message, it does not transfer instantly. The same is true when you receive a message. It has to be downloaded like an e-mail. This process in both cases takes 5 to 10 seconds.

Nothing that goes over a net browser will ever be as fast or reliable as using the telephone service. Even with high...

You have to tag those messages as "high priority", just like an e-mail. E-mails that aren't tagged this way from home computers won't always send instantly either.

I've sent e-mails from my home computer that didn't reach it's recipient for a whole week.

I don't know about Yahoo messages. I've never subscribed to that service. I'm only talking about standard two-way text messaging on newer Nextel phones.

With regular two-way messaging, it tells you who sent the message, either their name, phone number, or e-mail, depending on where the message is sent from, when the message was received, and other things like the subject, if they bother to include one.

When you send a message, you can receive a notification sent back to your phone when the message you sent gets delivered, if you so choose. On the newer phones, you can set up the text message almost exactly like an e-mail, or not. You can also attach pictures, voice records and contacts and ringtones as well.
