Public safety PTT on GSM?

An RCR News article had this quote:

"Ericsson demonstrated how, using off-the-shelf technologies, public safety could have access to live video, push-to-talk services, building plans and other features simultaneously."

Anybody know anything about Ericsson's GSM PTT demo?

I have actually heard of this and it is a good idea, but many companies out there including Sprint, Verizon and a few others are trying to “sell” their idea for a public safety network. Problem with GSM PTT is that it is very slow especially in comparison for Nextel’s PTT network, which the majority of public safety officials already use.

The local casino here has there own fire dept and EMS agency. Thats what they are dispatched on is Nextel PTT. For them it works great. They only average maybe 300-500 incidents per year. Also you need to look for downtime in the system in a critical matter. I can say in the 5 years I have had Nextel I have never had a down time due to a network issue. It was coverage issues I had, but I knew my limitations on where I would not have signal. All the PTT is realling coming out BIG for public safety. Almost every month there is a article in Critical Communications, MRT, and so on. Very interesting to see whats in plans and technology PTT can do! That have a few different talk groups. Very true. That off-network push to talk service is great too if there is no service.

The problem is communication as a whole in this country is horrible since there is no interoperability and we faced problems during other disasters such as Katrina and even on 9/11. Things must change!

The founder of Nextel who is now preaching for Cyren Call wants the FCC to give him a portion of the 700Mhz freqs (to be auctioned)for a nationwide Public Safety system. No doubt something like Nextel again. So now all the wireless co.`s are doing the same. My My what a surprise!. Do you See the $$$$$$.
