My brother and I went into Nextel yesterday, played with the phones (The i580 is sweet) and checked out the plans. Again, wondering whether now is a good time to join or to wait until Nov with the release of the Hybrid phones, the i880 and newer plans?
Also my employer discount only gets me 15% off bill at Nextel and 23% off Sprint.
As for phones, my brother likes the i580, I was wondering about the i305 (candybar with camera), i605 (candybar with huge screen).
And I played with sprint phones, the Sayno 4930 is very nice (wish it had a camera) as is the Sayno 7500 and Samsung Blade.
What do you think?
...
Why would you join Nextel/Sprint at all, with all the problems they are having there are so many better choices out there.
...
WHat problems are they having? Who is a better choice and still offers the options for unlimited text/pic plans?
...
Well, I would personally go with Verizon, then Cingular, then T-Mobile and last off Sprint/Nextel
Sprint/Nextel are having issues with merging the networks, and many places are complaining about coeverage, especially with the Nextel side.
Just my 2 cents
...
But what about coverage in North Carolina? DIdn't Cingular - AT&T have the same problem until finally Cingular worked out all the kinks?
As for Verizon - they have no unlimited txt/pic, neither does Cingular and T-Mobile doesn't offer service here in NC.
...
So your buying a cellular phone based on Text plans and not the Cellular service?
Verizon is great in the Carolinas, and works pretty much in areas where nothing else will.
Keep in mind that if you dont have cellular coverage that you cant send/receive text messages at all, I think your putting the cart before the horse.
...
Well I'd like to have unlimited text/pic options, and I know VZW, Cingular and Nextel/Sprint work good here in NC. Isn't GSM the way to go anyways with the rest of the world using it?
...
How often do you travel around the world?
...
I don't travel but won't the US go with a standard like GSM?
...
IF they do it wont be for many years, my personal thinking is that the next technology to come out will be different then GSM or CDMA and both carriers will have to change. So in about 5-7 years everybody will be using the same technology then
You mentioned going to nextel or sprint, well Nextel uses TDMA (the oldest technology avilable) and Sprint uses CDMA.
...
Nextel uses IDen which is derived from TDMA, as is GSM. Sprint also uses it as a secondary source. If history repeats itself, and something newer and better came out today, this second, it would take years, possibly 10 before the entire company would get switched over. We still got custies using Analog for heaven's sake.
...
Sprint uses CDMA and has nothing to to with GSM, Verizon (arguably the largest Carrier in America) is not going anywhere in the next 10 years, what I meant is the original poster said that eventually everybody will switch to GSM, and I disagreed that verizon will never switch to GSM and will just wait for the next technology to come along before changing to anything
...
GSM is older tech. CDMA can handle more and is more secure. It is derived from military technology and is illegal in europe. So they don't have much of a choice but GSM. CDMA is bieng deployed in alot of areas in the world were it is legal.
...
Its not "illegal", the reason they use GSM is that Europe adopted it and said they have to use only GSM so when people are traveling from European country to European country they will have a common technology to use
...

Exactly, so why would Verizon or Sprint want to switch back to the older GSM (in refrence to the original poster asking if they would switch)
...
it is ilegal please do research before you type.
...
I did, you might want to do research, dick. 🤣
...
I doubt USA will go to GSM because it will cost billions upon billions of dollars with new infrastructure, network, spectrum and spectrum tweaking, new handsets, and other things. It would not be in the best interest to do all GSM especially for those big CDMA carriers like Sprint and Verizon whom already spend billions upon billions on their network from towers to licenses to handsets.
...
That is BS. Verizon jsut came to my area in havelock NC and they suck. My friends get dropped calls left and right and very spotty coverage. I never ever had a problem with my sprint service here.
...
cool, happy to hear it, you also said that Verizon JUST came there, they havent had as much time to set up shop like Sprint has, I will gurantee you if you take a Verizon phone and a Sprint or Nextel phone, and drive throught the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia that Verizon will work better
...
I am in the military and we train in alot of places in the country and I get service more then my buddies that have verizon. I am roaming alot but at least I can make a call were they have no service. That is what I care about. I want to be able to use my phone. And sprint has set it up to were I can either on their network or someone elses.
...
Cool, glad to hear it, to each their own. 😉
...
And don't deploy a service until you are ready. When I was looking into sprint in 1999 they were just deploying in beaufort sc. I called and said can I get service. They said sorry we aren't ready yet. We only have 80% coverage their. Verizon was happy with 20% here now.
...
What is your obsession with Verizon? I know of many, many places in my area where my Nextel phone has a FULL signal and Verizon phones just roam or sometimes don't even have service.
I actually considered Verizon, but after dealing with some of the most arrogant and clueless salespeople ever, I quickly changed my mind. It was almost like it was a burden just for them to talk to me. I'm glad I went for Nextel instead. Yes, Nextel may have some problems right now, but they'll get them worked out, just as Cingular and AT&T did. I can't complain about my service, and that's all I care about.
...
They are called fanboys you see how the OP needed unlimited text, and the fanboy just dogged it and tried to sell up verizon it gets really old.
...
They aren’t merging the networks yet my friend, but they are putting tower infrastructure on each other’s towers.
There is also the “consensus plan” that is affecting some areas.
...
Honestly if you are intrested in nextel i would probably wait for the i880 its coming out nov 5. As for the hybrid there only goign to get launched in 25 markets this quarter and will get launched 1st quarter for the rest of the markets. The plans will not change there going to stay the same. So it pretty much comes down to the phone. You have 30 days to try it out and if you dont like it just cancel. But we give you 30 day to try it
...
Well it depends what you need each company for, because if you want IDEN’s push to talk and CDMA’S voice and data (just 1x for now DO later), I would wait until the dual mode phones comes out in November of this year and then the beginning of next year with the DO version. They are both very attractive phones. I just have to say just make sure you have coverage with either networks before you do any purchasing. Perhaps the trials will be best in your favor before you make your decision.
...
How could I try both Nextel and Sprint, that would mean signing up for two services and two phones? I wish they would just let you take phones in and out for 30 days till you found the one you liked. And why would the i880 be better then the i580?
And what are the hybrid phones look like?
...
Yikes, that's an ugly Hybrid phone, Racer because it looks like a race car, but so feature deficient, not sure I'd want that, will they not release any Hybrids with features like camera's, high speed data and bluetooth?
As for the i880 looks nice, so simply a i870 with 2 megapixels, nothing more?
...
the i880 will also have dual stereo speakers and will be smaller and lighter than the i870.
I believe it will also have an improved Bluetooth chipset.
...
some time next year they will release a nicer hybrid phone the ic902. The reason is that there testing the market with these lower models to see how they do. and next year is when the really nice ones comes out.
Now if im correct this one is the ic902
this one im not sure off
...
if you go to http://www.phonearena.com and type ic902 in the search then click the advanced tab it gives you some info...
...
Next year they will be releasing the IC902 that will have EV-DO on it and a 2 MEGA pixel camera.
...
Well I have heard people complain about Sprint/Nextel service. But where I have coverage problems are in the same areas I had problems with Cingular.
My friend is a truck driver and had been all across the US with his Sprint/Nextel phone and it worked fine. I have done some traveling myself and so far the only problem area I had was in the state of MS and my mom had verizon and she had a low signal in that area as well.
but that was just my 4 cents 🙂
