"Best" current phone

Which of the current flip phones has the best reception and signal? I have gone through two i730s and they both sucked. I need something better than this or I'm going to have to bail on Nextel.

The i860 is the best phone they currently carry.

I understand that it's considered their top model, but I'm more concerned with talking on the phone than taking pictures. Just because it's the most expensive doesn't mean it's the "best", as evidenced by the POS i730 that I have now.

The i860 is the best way to go, or if you don’t want to have pictures, the i710 and the 530 also will suit your non-picture great calling needs. (Again, I have heard no complaints about this, but when I tested them, I had no problems what so ever)

Hope that helps.

I have a i860 and a i836(wifes) and they both work well compared to a i730. I think my m470 works better than any of the iDEN phones out, but it's a 3 watt mobile. 😎

Wow, going through 2 i730’s and you finally realized that the they are the worse phones ever made by Motorola for Nextel. I am sorry for that problem though, but going forward let us try to fix it.

I am not sure what your needs are so I will just state that I think the 710 and the 860 are one of the best flip phones reception wise that Nextel has. In addition, the i530 and the i850 are very good phones reception wise. I would trust, though, the 530, i710 and 860 because I have heard no problems with those phones, but more importantly is that I used to have those phones, and I loved them. (I currently have the 860, 605 and the bb7520.)

Hope that helps.

By the way, you can always look at sprint’s phones if sprint has better coverage...

I, too, have had it with the i730. Don't get me wrong, its a nice phone, but, nothing but problems... Dropped calls, terrible hand-offs. My wife loves her i850, and according to FedEx, I should have my new i760 by tonight...
Not to mention, everyone my wife talks to say the reception and sound is 10x better than when she was with Cingular.

yea, I feel bad for all the 730 users out there because that is the worst phone that Motorola made for Nextel. Just the RF software and codeplugs seemed to be poorly made, because of those problems that you mentioned and I have experienced, because I had that phone till I got rid of it. Yea, the i850, 860 are two great phones that I like regarding RF.

Let me know what you think about the i760 when you receive it.

I'm really leaning towards the I830 because it appears to be the smallest phone they have. I truly hope that the reception is an improvement over the i730. I guess now we know why Nextel doesn't give any guarantees.

Don't expect to get a lot of battery life out of the i830. I had to get the extended battery for the wife within the 1st month.

I wouldn’t recommend the i830; one because of what markf said about the battery and with my testing of the phone it was very bad. Granted everything is better then the 730, but the i830 is another bad phone.

By the way, I had both and hated both. Go with a better phone that is very popular like the 860.

I just can't justify spending $250 on a phone with features comparable to the free phone you get from any other carrier. The attraction to the i830 was that it was small and less expensive.

I don't understand why Nextel (or any other carrier for that matter) can't just make a phone that does what a phone needs to do; get good reception. No cameras, mp3 players, whirlygigs, stupid ring-tones, just a phone. And make it small enough so that you don't need a little red wagon to tote it around in. If the camera phones from other companies are actually free now then they should pay me to take a phone that does nothing but ring and talk.

We all wish for those things, but it isn’t up to Nextel or the other carriers because it is really up to the manufacturers. They make the phones but the providers provide a service.

There was no attraction to the i830 because it is terrible like the i730 is.

Blame the manufacturers not the providers.

Every one of the x30 series (530, 730, 830) have reception problems. The 710 is basically the same phone as the 730 without the external display and there are no problems with it. Motorola and Nextel came up with what they thought was at least a temporary fix for the x30 series reception issue about a year ago (a cheap little piece of metal that was supposed to improve reception but didn't actually contace the antenna or anything else useful) but it did not fix it. As you can see by all of the low reception complaints, apparently they still haven't solved it.

Almost every x30 series I sold when I worked for them came back to my store with service issues. I had a construction company buy and return 46 of them due to no service. We let them try out 710's and there were no issues in the exact same area. The ones in the office got 730's and they all came back for the same problem. Friends with 830's all had the same problem. People with other models would have 3 bars and make calls while the people around us with various x30 series would all be minimal signal or no service. Motorola has admitted the problem but has yet to come up with a workable fix for it.

Interesting, becuase at my stores i have had no problem with the 710, and the 530 but had lots of problems with the 730. the i830 i didnt experience a lot of problems, but i tested it myself and i thought it was horrible so i told my clients and future ones not to get the 730, and 830. lol.

DOH! 🤣 Yea, the 710 had no problems, but all of the x30 series were the worst performing phones we ever sold at our store. Sadly, the one that worked the best out of any was the 205 (slightly out performing the 710 in the fringe areas). However, most people like their phone to have actual features so they passed on that one. 😉

yea, dohhh!!! lol. duhh.

the 205 works pretty well and a lot of people get that who doesnt care of the functionality and just wants to use it for calling and direct connect, but people are starting to upgrade towards the 860 and 605 and things like that.

what are you seeing in your store? (meaning what is one of the best product being sold)

(where ya from by the way so i can picture in my mind what market your in. i am in mass)

Yea, we are ready for day 1. Well, as ready as we are going to be anyway. We know as much as they will tell us.

I am not sure on current products as to what I would consider the best for the iDEN side, I am researching that myself as I want to grab one for my company phone when they become available to us.

I would say as far as the CDMA side probably the best we have going right now would be the Sanyo 5600 (never had one come back with problems), the Sanyo 7400 (going away soon but still a good phone with the newest S/W version), the Samsung 800 is a good phone and the only Samsung I would ever recommend (occasionally you will see one with a screen that goes backward but only about 1 in 500 do that), or the LG 535. Normally LG's...

Interestingly enough, I went in to a Nextel store to upgrade to the new i850. When I told the sales guy that I wanted to get rid of the i730 because it sucks, he pulled his off his belt and said it was the phone that they were giving to all the Nextel employees. He then proceeds to tell me that it's not a matter of the phone model but that it's all about towers and signals. Nothing I said could change his mind.

So he takes my phone, checks some numbers that he says have to do with signal strength, diddles with it a bit, and then tells me some new numbers that supposedly indicates that it has a better signal. I take the phone home, and get the same crappy signal and dropped calls.

What I really don't understand is that I told him I ...
