I posted a similar story in the Sprint forum. Might be true, there have been rumors of a Nextel/Sprint merger rattling around since the AT&Tingular merger talk started.

so if they did merge, would nextel get a wider selection of phones? and plans and things like that? this would kinda be cool

the interesting thing is that they would both bennefit from this marriage i belive. they both want to go eventually to ev-do rev a. they both have mmds spectrum as well as a very good network. nextel has a very good mgmt core, sprint doesnt. i mean i can go on and on about the differences that each of the companies have. so thats why these two companies are right for each other, becuase they both have weaknesses, however when they are combined i belive they will fill those weaknesses up.

nextel, mot, and qcom are making qchat as well as making a solution that makes cdma networks, which sprint has, compatiable with the iden network especially in the push to talk area. so yes i think that nextel could have wider phones due to that cdma/id...

i agree, this will be interesting and very exciting. So do you think that the current nextel/sprint customers will have to get new phones or have some type of a upgrade done to there phone?

its possible that they would have to. one would assume so, however i belive for 2-3 years that nextel/sprint would let nextel keep their iden network becuase its more profitable then sprint's network. nextel's mgmt whoever will be in the new company will have to analyze sprint's portfolio to see how they can make their spectrum holdings and tower locations more profitable and better then it is now. i belive that there could be a dual phoen such as iden/cdma overlapping with qchat. qchat is a product developed by qcom with the help of motorola in making the iden network mostly the push to talk product be compatible on the cdma networks.

it shall be interesting. whats your take on the situation?
