Qchat call was successful on 7/23 and all the QCOM chipset phones were blocked on 8/6. Which is it?

Are we going to see QCHAT (or HPPTT or CDMA fast chirp) in 2008 without the Broadcom/Qualcomm dispute being settled? Sprint is saving a lot of money on the iDEN system by technology cost savings. iDEN makes money. No advertising, no new phones, cost savings on new technology, high ARPU, solid customer base. Why are we getting rid of a perfectly good vehicle? The QCHAT solution only works well in EVDO-A sites which are only near cities. Cops and contractors may work in the city, but they live in the city. Ask a cop or your plumber for that beat up Nextel phone and ask him/her if he will replace this tool with a $300 phone that is going to work at best the same. I think we can save Nextel(iDEN) from the hands of Sprint's master plan. If we jus...

Sprint is working on a software that work around the chip ban, while at&t and VZW are paying a percentage of the patent. LX400 has been approved by FCC, and is a HPPTT phone.

Yea but VZ is paying not much for the patent and Qcom did not want to pay $2.5B for it. $200m would be better and that is what VZ thought it was worth.

I think Qchat will not be an overnight success, but a couple of years after a full launch, I think Qchat can adequately replace direct connect.

It should give customers all the comforts of direct connect with faster Internet available on their phones, more data capable phones and a larger (and in my opinion better) voice network.

Yes, I'm sure there will be push back. Yes, some people will be unhappy, some people are unhappy no matter what.

But in the long run I believe this will contribute to a better product.

Qchat will probably not get rid of Direct Connect as it is not better than DC on the set up and intra calling, however, with that said, it is better than DC with data and data offerings. There are more things you can do with Qchat than with DC.

Yea I know I saw that but I think it would be closer to up to $3b because of the potential it can perhaps get in the future. They do have a workaround but obviously QUALCOMM and Sprint need to win this or else there would be major major issues going into the future for Sprint and perhaps Qualcomm. More for Sprint though.

What is Sprint's workaround for areas with no EVDO-A. What is the workaround for all of this bad press? What is the workaround for getting Qualcomm based chipset phones in America? Why am I saying workaround?

What is Sprint's workaround for areas with no EVDO-A? Probably a slower connection and/or the delay of those handsets in those markets What is the workaround for all of this bad press? What are you talkin about? All press is GOOD PRESS. It still gets people talkin. What is the workaround for getting Qualcomm based chipset phones in America? a new chipset Why am I saying workaround? Because you damn well feel like it.

If I can recall the workaround solution is for the 3G patents that are being bared because the ITC gave Broadcom their Injunction for Qualcomm chips. If it is not 3G patents then it does not matter unless there are other disputes in the working. Since QUALCOMM touches many of the patents especially based on 3G, carriers want to have access to those patents, and that is why we saw a side deal with Broadcom with Verizon. That could be in the future with others too. Workaround solutions could be from changing something in the chipset or changing the software so it does not violate any patents. Problem is, Broadcom will sue also for those because they would say that it would violate the patents also. Big mess when it comes to that situation. Mor...

Another article!!!

I agree that Qchat is a better offering than iDEN's Push To Talk. I wonder if people who have PTT will want Qchat though.

Also is the technical workaround for Qchat and the other two patents are at a stop or does Qchat require 3 patents and there is only one workaround so far and they need two more to get Qchat off the ground.

Yes people would still want Qchat if they have PTT. As I mentioned before there are things you can do on Qchat especially since it uses REV A than with Nextel’s IDEN. In addition, it is better than any other PTT solution out there so it could entice those.

I did not read further about the Qchat situation but all they have to do is get a workaround solution or have the court reverse it. Moreover, of course if that does not work, they would settle.

Yes. It will happen especially with the work-around software that they have in place. Actually IDEN has some advertisements but it is more on the dual phone devices. (Which you could say that it is an IDEN product since it uses DC.)

1. If Qualcomm and Broadcom do not settle
2. The courts do not grant a stay- pending outstanding issues
3. If the workaround solution doesn’t pass both legal scrutiny and performance wise
4. The products for the Qchat software wasn’t in this country before the ban date
If the above 4 reasons do take place then Sprint and the Qchat will be in a world of trouble. Estimates say that if the 4 do happen it could cost Sprint up to $3b. This would impact the current users and potential future users. As well as investments by Sprint made into the Qchat system.

Actually if the other issue with the 3G chips with the ban continues and there are no legal winnings for Qualcomm or negotiations do not happen with Broadcom, the entire United Sta...

I have not looked recently on Qchat if they actually have that feature available but I can say that if there is a demand they will find a way to offer that kind of service. I doubt that they would offer this though. I think the most important thing to note about Qchat rather than technical aspects regarding speed, latency, efficiency, bandwidth saving, and others is to note that the devices which Qchat will be utilizing Sprint’s fast data network which enables them to offer data multimedia services and other over the air solutions and software.
