T-Mobile To Introduce New Caller ID Feature

Breaking away from the news, sales and normal rotation of stories we’ve received word of a nifty little feature T-Mobile will introduce on November 14th. T-Mobile will launch a $2.99 Caller Name Display add on feature that will allow customers to view the names and numbers of callers even if they aren’t listed in the customers address book. We’re trying to get word on what devices this will work on but we believe there is a 30-day free trial for postpaid customers.

A nifty little feature for those of who constantly receive phone calls from unknown numbers though in my case, I just let those people meet my voicemail.

Anyone have any experience with this feature? I see TMO wants another $2.99/mon...

I see t

1) The data that's displayed only works when being called by T-Mobile customers.
2) The data also comes when published landline customers call.

I can't imagine they would be able to send data from another carrier unless that carrier allows it. And if it's allowed, I can't see it escaping litigation. It would be ripe for a legal battle.

Where do you see any of that crap?
All this feature does is exactly what caller ID does for landlines: if their number is a listed number, it displays that info. If its not, it will show unlisted. When I call a land line with caller ID from my cell phone, it shows my name and number.

A legal battle? Give me a break, cell phones are NOT anonymous...

My apologies, I somehow deleted most of the first paragraph.

You're basically saying the same thing I was trying to convey. I'm not sure where you think I "see any of that crap," seeing as how it was speculation. Again, that paragraph would have brought more insight into what I was trying to say.

My point was this. I can see two scenarios:

First, the caller ID data is only data on T-Mobile customers.

OR

The data is on T-Mobile AND landline customer - basically, whatever is transmitted on the caller ID system.

T-Mobile doesn't always send caller ID data, which is common in my area. That may be different in your area.

Where I am (and places I've lived), AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint never transmit caller ID data, so such...

I have this feature with Metro. Unless you opt out your name displays on caller ID. Every person that calls from Sprint, Verizon, and Metro shows up. Sometimes on a family line account, the primary account holder shows up. That said, I don't think I've ever had a T-mo or AT&T show up.

I'm in the same boat, and from my 4 years in wireless I can tell you that you have to opt out of caller ID if you don't want your number to appear on people's caller ID. It has nothing to do with carrier, and the default is that your number is NOT anonymous. Just like landlines, you have to ask for your caller ID not to show. I would love for someone to try and sue over that, the judge would throw it out immediately. The only time someone would have a case (and a weak one at that) is if they specifically requested for their caller ID not to show, which is totally separate from what we are discussing here.

That this is nothing new or exciting, landlines have done it for years, just because cell carriers decided to get off their tails and do it doesn't mean it's a new wonderful thing that people would love to pay for...

Since most of the people that call me are in my phone book, this is a useless feature that comes standard with my plan on the Optimus M. I would not pay extra for it.

Same! =) I am sure there are a few people who would want this feature, certain businesses probably have a use for it I'm assuming, but its pointless for me.

Actually my girlfriend has it on her line because she is currently looking for a job, and it works really well. I don't need it on mine as all the numbers I'd ever need are in my address book, but the feature does find its place among business people and certain situations.
