T-Mo used to throw in some free text message with their plans, why don't they do that anymore? It would be a bonus and also cause less headaches for the people who call in and get all upset because they have $0.10 in text messaging charges.

To my knowledge, our older plans had the 50 incoming text for free because at the time our system generated text messages such as over the air updates, spending limit balance alerts, voicemail alerts, past due alerts etc., were charged as a text message. Now, to my understanding those same messages are no longer charged/counted as a text message, so the 50 incoming were removed from more current plans.

There were the old talk and text plans, which were just a type of plan that was grandfathered, and the old t-zones for $2.99 that included 300 text messages and 30 pic messages was grandfathered because we were losing revenue from it. There are still quite a few people that have it though.

The real reason T-Mobile no longer offers the 50 free incoming sms... money. It doesn't seem like a lot, but take 17 million customers and multiply it by 50 free messages per month, then $.05/sms (mind you, this is only incoming messages 😉 ). I'll do the math for ya: $42,500,000.00 per month. Although this is not actual numbers, it answers your question. Adding a text message feature is a definite customer benefit. Not giving them away for free is a T-Mobile act of genius!! 😎
