Samsung Behold vs. T-Mobile G1

Folks,

My upgrade eligibility has kicked in on 10/28/2008 and at the moment I am "up in the air" on my decision between upgrading to the T-Mobile G1 pending the arrival of the Samsung Behold T919, which I hear is quite similar to the Samsung Instinct that Sprint has available with the exception of maybe the TV feature that the Instinct users can access. By the way, my wife and I both have T-Mobile Shadow Phones at the moment and are still happy with them.

I have compiled a list of comparison attributes from what I know about each and have declared what in my mind seems to be the "advantage in favor of" decision.

1. T-Mobile G1 is Open Source allowing for further application expansion. However, at the current availability of Applic...

How about waiting until the Behold is launched so you can make your decision after looking at the phones?

The touch screen on the G1 is one of the better screens on the market. I'm not sure what makes you thinkg is "tan trummy." I have yet to have any problems with it.

Is the Behold for sure releasing on 11/10 though? On that basis, I could try out the G1 and give it 14 days to see if it works or not for me?

Thanks for the reply Robtheman.

As far as I've seen we are scheduled to launch this on the 10th. However I would agree and say to wait till then to test one of these guys out in store.

What's another two weeks? Seriously, just wait until the Behold shows up in the store before you make your decision. Samsung has some really nice touch screen phones, but it also has some terrible ones (like the Glyde). If that's a concern, wait until you can actually use one.

Thanks Rob for your insight but I am asking if there is a certainty as oppsoed to tentativeness surrounding the release date on that phone? This would help me in gauging my Buyer's Remorse possibility a little better to start it about 14 days out prior to the Behold's release this way I can directly exchange the phones on the same day.

November 10th is pretty certain. T-Mobile does not often delay handset launches this close to the date.

Thank you Lancekalzas. You sure this may not be a first (for delays)? I'm praying it's not so that my decision is kind of eased a little.

Appreciate the feedback nevertheless.

Does that apply if you are exchanging for a different phone during the buyer's remorse? I have returned an upgrade once that I did not like in the past and was never charged this restocking fee back in 2005. This leads me to ask how long this restocking fee has been around with T-Mobile?

well i have recently discovered that the G1 actually takes up to a 16G also.

The data plan on the G1 is way over priced and over-rated.

The rumor is that BlackBerry/Windows Mobile phones will match the same data rates as the G1 ($25 for web + 400 MSG, $35 for web + Unlimited MSG). It's not a bad deal at all and the rumor also has it that it includes access to Wi-Fi hotspots. Looking at AT&T's bundle rates it's $50 for web + unlimited MSG.

i've played with both and decided to pass on both.

the g1 is too bulky and missing a few things that are important to me.

the behold has pages of problems that tmo knows about and is still launching the phone. the touchwiz interface is very nice and quite different from the instinct. the widgets are easy to move around and use. the phone eats up the battery too fast, the camera is very slow .. i mean very slow. in bright sunlight the screen is near impossible to view.

in january the blackberry curve 2 will be launched i am waiting for that device.

You have to realize the phone has been out less than a month and no one (developers included) have had the phone. You can only do so much with the Android emulator. Plus on top of that google is not allowing developers to charge for apps until the first of the year.

The phone can only expand and grow as it matures. Everything on the phone can be changed, so a G1 6 months from now could look completely different than one from now.

The behold will be the same 6 months from now so you have to ask yourself, if there is something missing from the G1 can you live without it until a developer releases it?

Web2go is Tzones 2.0 so it will not have a full HTML web browser in it. And you will not be able to use the T-Zones proxy with the G1. T-mobile is checking this and will send you a text telling you that you need the G1 data or they will turn off the data on the phone all together.

The internet data plan for the G1 and other data phones is full web browsing. Pages will load like they do on your home computer. This will be more expensive because you have expanded capabilities that you don't get with Web2go.

Yes the data plans are going to be changed to be along the same lines as the G1 data with txt and data. Most people though are already using text and data so it won't effect very many people.

This is my impression of the G1

I bought the G1 phone 10/25. I find the design really unweildly and overall the functionally is not crisp the screen movement is sometime quite slow the ball movement must be quite precise to use it and the screen scroll functions are not fluid.
I read someone else saying this phone having great touch screen functionality I don't know anyone with a phone that has touch screen other than the Iphone and its not close to it.

I've recently discovered that my G1 has an older Release of the G1 Firmware (TC4-RC19, which is the older release vs. TC4-RC29, which is the newer release). Based upon my research on forums, other G1 users have reported a better experience from performance and behavioral perspectives (e.g. - better battery life, Browser Security is better, etc). What completely frustrates the crap out of me is that T-Mobile (and Google) are the controlling parties to provide these as OTA Updates. I am aware that there are ways to force the update with the use of a Micro SD Card but from my experience last night, it failed, as in none of the steps worked as documented. I have had my phone since 10/31/2008 and have not received even a single update as yet ...

What phone am i supposed to get if everyone has nothing to say but bad things about the G1 and the behold. T-mobile has the best plans out there and its like your telling me they have nothing but bad phones. I'm seriously thinking about just forking out the money and switching to Cingular and getting the iphone. Which is it the G1 or the Behold which is better. and when will they start advertising the Behold. It supposedly comes out the 10th and everyone is hush hush about the phone. Not everyone has bad things to say about the G1. The people who love the G1 are too busy using it and having a great time. The people that are posting on here are the whiney little brats who have nothing better to do but complain how the phone is not perfect. First let me respond to the firmware issue. T-Mobile doesn't release the firmware update to all phones at the same time. They roll it out in groups. You also have to understand that there have been 3 updates so far. The 3 different updates were infact the 3 different dates for each of the updates. Just because you haven't received probably means you will get the lates one and skip the old ones.

Now on to the phone itself. Its fine if you do not like the phone, its not for everyone. But I wouldn't base my judgement on the people here on phonescoop. Most seem to be Sprint fanboys(Diamondpro) or will never be happy with their phone.

The Behold is a decent phone, but I believe it is inferior to the G1 in many ways.

What are you smoking? The data plans for all internet phones besides the Shadow are the same as the G1. The Web2Go is for "phone first" phones. The $9.99 and $19.99 dataplans include a max of 100MB of data that caps at $15 overage. A blackberry uses that much when it checks 5 web pages or loads e-mail for a day.

If your going to get an internet phone, get the whole internet. Otherwise your getting a big phone for nothing
