Should I switch to T-Mobile...?

I am currently with Verizon Wireless and have no real complaints about coverage, but the pricing, plans and customer service are another story. I checked the personal coverage map on T-Mobile and my area (central NJ) doesn't get much coverage (more specifically my street, not my entire neighborhood), but T-Mobile's plans are awesome. I would love the Sidekick so I can get the $20/month Sidekick "extras" plan (unlimited internet, email, IM and texting). Would it be worth it to break my VZW contract, pay the $175 and to go to T-Mobile?

Also, I know this has been the topic of many threads but I don't have the time to go through 171 pages of topics to find my answer to this question: what exactly is 3G and when T-Mobile puts this into effect...

I was also with Verizon up to March of this year. I was with VZW back when they were GTE Wireless! I switched to T-Mobile and currently have the Dash with $39-voice, $19-unlimited data & internet, + $4.99 text plan. I left not only for pricing...I save about $25 a month over the same similar plan that I would have had with VZW. The other reason was customer service. Verizon started to get this attitude...especially in their stores. If they didn't know an answer, they brushed it off or dismissed it. If a rep at T-Mobile didn't know the answer, he/she referred me on to someone who did.

Regarding coverage...I 1st had an issue with T-Mobile where I lived. So I didn't sign-up at that time, but I did report it and put in a trouble ticket...

Wow, thank you so much for all of that information. I've been doing a lot of research on T-Mobile lately...because I have been with VZW for a long time (not as long as you had, LOL...but for about 8 yrs) and I would be a little nervous to leave them. I just want to make sure that I will be happy if I end up leaving VZW afterall. And I have over a year left on my contract, but over time I would be saving money if i DID end up switching to T-Mobile soon as opposed to throwing my money to VZW until my contract expires! And yes, their customer service has gotten worse over the years. If they don't know the answer to your question, they give you the "you're S.O.L." attitude.

I emailed T-Mobile regarding coverage in my area, a rep responded sa...

Your Welcome! 🙂 The best to you and your decision!

For me as far as deadspots, I have not had one yet...at least here in the Bay Area, CA.

When I lodged my trouble ticket, I was a customer under a 14-day trial. When at the time (2-3 years ago) it appeared that it wasn't going to work out, I went back to T-Mobile to close my account. Let me tell you, there was no whining or "you'll be sorry" or "don't let the door hit you on the way out", no hard-sell, just "we're sorry to lose you as a customer, and hope you'll consider us again in the future"!! They couldn't have been more gracious! I received all my refunds. The level of customer service I received, even when bailing out was exceptional! That's why I asked them if something ...

Well I took your advice and called them yesterday. First off, the customer service was beyond exceptional. I forget the girls name, but she was overly friendly and made me laugh the entire time. I explained to her my situation and she instantly started helping me get the answers to my questions. She couldn't find out whether or not there would be towers in my area in the near future, but she did mention the new T-Mobile HotSpot to me, and how it's like having a tower in my place. She also told me the Sidekick LX wasn't a hotspot phone, so I told her that i probably wouldn't go for the hotspot because the Sidekick is the phone I want. But she did let me know that if for some reason T-Mobile doesn't give a reception in my area, then the phone ...

get the curve it is almost like the sidekick but has the wifi and it will work at your house great if you have hi speed internet and a wireless router, until you have a phone with wifi, you do not realize how good it is. Cause even though edge is fast wifi is faster and you can browse internet or even talk on wifi. till I got this phone, I do not know why all phones don't have it.
I mean go to starbucks or a hot spot and even if you have full signal, switch to wifi, and notice the difference, like you said the plans are cheeper and you have 14 days to try it out.

Thanks...i went to the T-Mobile store yesterday to check out all of the phones...the curve is nice, but there's just something about the Sidekick that's calling my name when i decide to switch. But I agree with you 100%....why ALL of the phones don't have the ability for HotSpot is beyond me. Especially if the coverage is spotty in some areas, they want to keep the current customers and bring new ones aboard. And the HotSpot is a great idea for that. But I'll probably be making the switch in the next 2 months...I just found out that since my company has a business acct with T-Mobile, all employees get a discount with them, so it will be happening soon.

Thanks for all the insight!!!

I agree with JoeNash...the Curve would be nice and have everything re: Wi-Fi & Hotspot @ Home. (Found out the Curve has this through the reps I deal with @ T-Mobile).

But if the Sidekick is "calling your name", then go with that! 😁 I like the Sidekick too, but I like the direct e-mail push that my Dash has. Don't know if I could give that up! The reps stated I could still get e-mail with the Sidekick, but you have to sign-on and pull it up and into the Sidekick to read any new e-mail's.

Also asked them if they will have more UMA/Hotspot @ Home phones other than the Curve and the 2 flip phones...was advised by next year they plan to have close to 10 more with that software capability in them.

Wow, that's good to know. i wonder if they will offer existing customer the possibily of a software upgrade on those imparticular models so they can all access the hotspots. i doubt it, but you never know. The Curve is definitely a nice phone, but the Sidekick, yeah...that's calling my name lol. I would assume that if the HotSpot is doing so well, that all of their phones they will come out with from this point on should have the software for it. it's actually a really good idea. I know a lot of cell phone providers lose a lot of signal (if not all) when inside a house/apt. My VZW phone has great reception in my area....except my apt. i linger on 1 bar, and usually drop a call about once a day with it. Friends with T-Mo have the same recepti...

you might also want to look into their Flexpay option, which you can actually do month to month with. Flexpay is a little bit of prepay and postpaid. its like postpaid b/c you get to choose from all of their plans and most of their features, and its like prepay b/c you pay for the plan before you use it! you can choose between a no contract, 1 year, or 2 year contact, just changing the price of the phones.

...thats great! Sometimes I hope Sprint would be as good as T-Mo in Customer Care, but as of plans what sort of a minute plan were you looking for? and how much are you paying per month for service with VZW?

well I was looking at T-Mo's $39.99/month for 600 anytime min, unlim. nights/weekends and with the Sidekick for an extra $20 you get unlimited texts to anyone in the nation, unlimited IM, unlimited email and unlimited Internet. with VZW i'm paying $59.99/month and i'm only getting 450 anytime min, unlim. nights/weekends/vzw-vzw, unlimited texts and IM. so for the same price with T-Mo I'll get a lot more, and the unlim. internet and email would really help me. How long have you been with Sprint? I hear their profit has dropped dramatically this year...

Lets not set the wrong expectation here. Sending a trouble ticket will not make T-Mobile put a cell site in your area. The tower you speak of was already in progress WAY before you ever placed that trouble ticket. It is true the network is always expanding, but I don't want customers to have the wrong expectations....

Sorry All...wasn't my intention on being misleading or giving false hopes. I guess everything just happen to fall in place for me in a timely fashion, so I took it for granted that it had something to do with the trouble ticket.

I actually had tried twice prior in the last 3-4 years to sign-up with T-Mobile...but it wasn't until late last year, or early part of 2007 that coverage improved.

Yeah man I've worked for Sprint since the day i turned 16! Im 17 1/2 years old but take my job very seriously. I mean, to answer your question I've had Sprint for about 1 1/2 years and never had an issue. As of plans, I can only refer you to Sprint Exclusive SERO plans. When you get a chance, visit www.Sprint.com/SERO
the plans here start at $30/month for 500 minutes and INCLUDES unlimited Mobile to Mobile, roaming, nationwide long distance
and nights and weekends at 7 pm. More importantly, it includes unlimited text and internet usage on your handset. 500 minutes not enough? The plan above this is $49.99/month for 1,250 minutes with the same bells and whistles nights and weekends at 7, unlimited internet and text etc..or $99.99 for 2,500...

Hey Sprint 2007,

Thank you very much for the info on Sprints possible plans, but I've known people that have had them and to be honest, couldn't wait for their contract to be up so they could switch providers. Plus I've been reading a lot online lately on sites like engadget and the boy genius report how Sprints profits are rapidly decreasing. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be offensive to your company, and I respect you dishing out all of the good things about Sprint, but I'm doing my research on all the major providers before switching. If I were to leave VZW, chances are it would be for T-Mobile.
Thanks again though and best of luck!

Hey man just thought I could help. No worries, I was not offended in any way 😉

The reason Sprint had a lot of a profit decrease is mainly because alot of Employee and Business fraud. BELIEVE me, theres alot. Other than that man keep me posted on which route you decide to take. God bless bro and take care! 😉

Trust me, i definitely appreciate your insight on Sprint and letting me know of other options out there!! The more insight on each cell provider, the better! I will definitely let you know....I'm pretty sure i'm gonna make the switch to T-Mo but it's just a matter of having that extra $300 to get the Sidekick LX....lol.

Thanks again bro and take care! 😎
