Won a SDA! Should I leave Verizon for T-Mobile?

Hey All!

I won a SDA phone through "T-Mobile Days" out here in California! 😁 I'm really jazzed and happy about it, for I really like the phone and want to be with T-Mobile...for as a whole, I like them as a company (better than VZW). Also had a chance to play around with the phone (my 1st Smartphone!), and I really like it...I'm hooked! But there is a couple of issues holding me back.

1st, I'm still under contract with Verizon till next year. 2nd, the reception where I live in Oakland, CA. I found out is a little on the weak side. A friend who has T-Mobile makes calls just fine outside in front of my apt building...but inside can be sketchy (1-3 bars). 3rd, have family/friend's still on VZW (mobile to mobile).

So should I:...

In my opinion, you have the phone now, enjoy it! 😁 besides, if you wait a year, you are bound to want something different with more features that you like better. As for reception, you already have one honest opinion (your buddy's 😎 ); furthermore, the only way to know if you like T-Mobile and it works for you is to try them out. 😲

Now, in reguards to the ETF w/Verizon Wireless, to me, you are still coming out ahead paying to get out rather than paying $540 to a company you may be leaving anyway...right? 😕

To further help you out, I have two (2) contracts with Verizon Wireless, one of which is up July 20th and when it is, I am going to T-Mobile because I want to get the Sidekick 3; my other contract is with a phone that is s...

Your right gadgetguy...actually with tax for 12 month's it would be around $636...so $175 is definately a lot less. Do you have to pay that all at once? Or if I pay half then half do you think that would be OK with VZW?

I still may keep the VZW for basic communications as you stated and use the SDA for internet, hot spot's, etc.

Well, I don't have to make an immediate decision on it.

Thanks again! 🙂

Hey, No Problem Dude! 😁

Actually, I think now, but you should double check me, I think Verizon is prorating ETF's but this might be for a new contract with an early out...but again, please double check me. 😉

On a different note, I do have a question though, I DO NOT SEEM TO NOSE INTO YOUR BUSINESS, but I thought you stated that you couldn't afford two (2) cell contracts, if you kept one for voice and another for data/internet, isn't that double taxing you? 😕

You don't have to answer it's your business...

Glad I could help 😁

Thanks again, and your right...VZW may pro-rate my ETF. Either way, even if I pay the full $175...to me it's still less than if I bought a phone outright "out of contract" which I have seen other's do in the past.

No...your not nose-ing into my biz! If I do the data-only on the SDA, it would be a little less than if I did full data/voice on the SDA and voice only on my VZW phone. But if I decide to do the T-Mobile acct with the SDA, I'll cancel the VZW acct.

Thanks again! 😁

Wow, you won an SDA? lucky. I am with tmobile, and trust, me, they are truly awesome. and you know, they are reallydoin something about their coverage too right now. so, hey, what zip code do you live in so i can see the coverage.

i say, go with tmobile. because even if you only get 1-3 inside your apt., you can still make phone calls. In my house I get 1-full signal. and I can make calls with great reception with 1 bar. You can try tmobile out for 14 days. and then see how you like it.

Hey Thanks! Yes...T-Mobile is a great company! Fantastic customer service!! As far as the phone...well the phone itself is great. The converage in my apt...questionable. Most of the time it barely hovers around 1-bar, but a lot of the time the phone is on "searching". Then it'll pop back on with 5-bars for a second, then go back down to 1. If I stay in the bedroom area's near the window, it'll go up to 2...maybe 3, but just for a short while. Earlier this evening while I was charging the phone...it was on Cingular's network with 2-3 bars for a second, but went back to T-Mobile. Around Oakland, coverage is otherwise pretty good. My Verizon phone is usually on a constant 2-3 bars inside...but that's everywhere in the apt.

My zip is ...

Hey All...I gave it a try, but it's not working in my apt. 😢 😡 The phone almost constantly says "searching"...then maybe get 1-bar or two, and that's at one end of the apt near the window. I've called customer service, tech dept and gone back to the store. All the reps I've spoken to are "stellar" and have really tried to help, but no one can advise me if any new towers are going up in my neighborhood any time soon. I even tried to put it on manual and force it over to Cingular, but the phone/network told me it can't transfer the "setting's"?? Basically it's as it was 2-years ago when I tried T-Mobile previously. So I'm going to have a friend of mine sell the SDA on E-Bay for me. I may then turn around and get the Moto-Q through Veri...

...just had a 2nd thought, I could also disconnect the service...throw it in a drawer and hang on to it until service improves, then turn it back on again. But then I could also raise enough money on selling it and put the proceeds towards another phone. Opinions please?

Thanks again!

I would hang on for a long time, because putting towers up takes a long time. (At least 1+ years)

If I were you, since it seems you have talked to the necessary parties to see if they can fix it, and nothing can be done just part your ways and be done with it. Next carrier, should have either 800 MHz or 850 MHz so that the in-building propagation would be better than what would you had which was at 1.9 GHz. Obviously coverage is not guaranteed especially in-doors but at least they tried helping you. See if you can perhaps get out of the contract without paying the ETF. I would sell your SDA and then move over to a carrier of the frequencies that I mentioned. Basically, Cingular, Nextel, or Verizon.

I don't have to worry about the ETF with T-Mobile, I'm still under the 30-day trial period. Also I still have my phone/acct active with Verizon.
