Sorry, UK uses differnet GSM bands than the US. Unless it is triband or quadband it will not work on T-Mobile's US network.

MAke sure any phone you buy abroad for US use on T-Mobile has 1900 MHz GSM...that's all they use here.

Pimp, I think you are out of your jurisdiction here. Almost EVERY GSM phone uses 1900 MHz as one of its radio frequencies. Most dual band world phones are 900/1900, and most tri band world phones are 900/1800/1900. In other words, 1900 is a very commonly used GSM frequency worldwide, and just about any phone you can find, on T-Mobile UK or anywhere else, will support it.

tribands usually incorporate 1900 as well, and last to be added is 800(850)

I just checked T-Mobile UK's website, and they do use 1800, but it looks like most of their phones are tri-band, and lots of their roaming partners are 900.

I thought that either O2 or Orange used 1900 also...

I was under the assumption that no EU member uses the 1900mhz band.

Well I was confusing 1800 and 1900 in the first place, so don't take my word for it. I had been under the impression that 1800 was used in South America (Brazil and Chile) and not many other places. I'm a little surprised that Voicestream chose 1900 MHz now... it seems like 1800 would have been a better choice, unless maybe the U.S. just doesn't sell licenses for that frequency.

US uses 1900 and 800 (850)... most other countries use 900/1800, with some using 1900 such as the Cayman Islands and Bolivia. There is also some scattered 800 MHz in a few countries I believe.

Yes, actually a few other countries in South America and Central America I think are the ones who use 850. What I was wondering is if the U.S. specifically prohibits anyone from using 1800 for a reason, or if they just have never gotten around to auctioning it off?

Not sure WHY they don't use it in the US, honestly. You would think the FCC and those guys would want the extra revenue. But they monitor spectrum allocations so closely here, it doesn't surprise me.
