Hey all T-mobile people, a quick question, please 🙂

My roomate bought an unlocked Motorola L6 quad band phone (to replace his t-mobile branded Moto 360) and when he changed the sim card, the home screen on the phone shows cingular as the carrier.
We are in San Diego. He configured T-zones and that works just fine (with the T-mobile online tool). He is concerned about the Cingular name on his screen. I did a network search from his phone and all I got was Cingular appearing twice (as if it was two networks), but T-mobile never appearead. Is this normal in San Diego or is he somehown roaming on Cingular and not getting a T-mobile signal? I think he is concerned about roaming charges, even though I keep telling him he shouldn't. But maybe...

No it doesn't! cingular and T-Mobile shared a network in California and the network identifier says cingular unless you have an EONS SIM card. T-Mobile will likely eventually change the network identification to T-Mobile but it hasn't happened yet. If you're a T-Mobile subscriber you do *not* roam in California and Nevada.

If there is a roaming agreement. Always *if* there is a roaming agreement. No roaming agreement all you'll get is emergency services only.

So you don't work for them any longer? cingular's only been around for five years. They were founded in 2001 with the joining of Southwestern Bell Mobile Systems and Bell South DCS.

Most t-mobile rate plans include roaming. While you have T-mobile service, phones especially GSM phones, do not discriminate who's tower it's receiving. You may set it to just be on one carrier (usual only on carrier bought phones) but so long as you have the right rate plan, you'll be ok.
