T-Mobile Hotspots
im gonna be starting some online classes in the fall and i was told by a t-mo rep that there will be a sony ericcson card thats tri-band and Wifi with gprs capabilities... now with hot spots can you access your wifi anywhere that has wifi or does it have to be t-mobile designated hotspot location

You can access any hotspot but any that are not owned by Tmo you will be required to use a credit card to access the service. If you plan to travel a lot get an account with Boingo Wireless. They are a WiFi billing provider and with a Boigo account you can access any hotspot and it will not cost you extra.

Actually, if you find an unencrypted, open access point you can use any 802.11b card to access it. Being signed up for HotSpot just means you can use the proxy for TMobile sites, but the card itself doesn't give a good rat's arse which access point it snags. Where I live there are a LOT of public access points and I use a LinkSys 802.11g card--it finds the TMobile HotSpots just fine, but I don't have the service so I can't get past the proxy check without doing some finagling, which I would NEVER do... 😁

thx for all of the replies... i do want to get t-mobile hotspots but i dont want to be limited to just the designated hotspots.. i know the sony ericcson card will have gprs (56K) too with wifi but i hate dial up speed... so are there any recommendations on a service where i can use wifi anywhere there is a wifi spot? or will the t-mobile wifi card be able to pick up connections on any wifi spot?
