I'm not even sure if Tmobile is even worrying about EDGE at this moment. According to my Tmobile rep, they are just worrying about gaining subscribers to their current network and eliminating the debt incurred by building out said network.

guys
keep eyes on after Thanksgiving, 2004
T-Mobile will launch EDGE someday after that
actually, T-Mobile is running EDGE in certain area, but for voice only, that to widen bottleneck due to EDGE helps increasing voice capacity as well

anyone have any speculation as to when tmo will be dropping UMTS? i mean they had the first full GSM network in the states, so why cant they be the first to have UMTS and/or EDGE? i love tmo, i get great reception, great CS, but they are behind the times on a few things, i dont browse the net from my phone too much YET because i cannot stand the ridiculously slow speeds that a standard GPRS connection gives......

Tmo may skip 3G
because the cost is way too beaucoup, and don't get too much advance from even EDGE
EDGE will surely happen after Thanksgiving this year

why would they skip 3g? that would make tmobile non existant or not even a competitor in oh say....5 years, they will not skip 3g, technology marches on and t mobile, just like other companies will jump to UMTS when it becomes the standard in the US (for GSM carriers) (and lets go ahead and exclude verizon and sprint from this), that makes no sense to me, i could see them skipping EDGE, but not UMTS

is there a chance that T-mobile might use 2100 UMTS instead of 1900 UMTS? I was looking at the US spectrum allocation and it shows that the spectrum allocated for UMTS in the international community is also reserved for mobile use in the US. Quite ironic that allocated spectrum is not being used for its purpose.
I still haven't understood that what is the point of being "different" from all of the other countries. Americans must use a different system in everything. Think of it this way, what if someone with 3G, as their service provider, in the UK came to the US and wanted to use the 3G services. This is an immense loss of roaming revenue for American companies. "Hey, wake up and smell the morning coffee!! (Take from an American advert)

One slight correction to this would be UMTS would concern Verizon and Sprint. In fact Sprint has been working on this technelogy and coined the term WCDMA which is not an official term but it is still the same. UMTS is a form of CDMA. CDMA is truly more stable. It is just the fact that it is not internationally accepted and most carriers Verizon for example hardly even use CDMA to its fullest.

WCDMA is not closely related to CDMA

Verizon Sprint don't use the UTMS/WCDMA upgrade path which is a TDMA->GSM->UTMS/WCDMA path. Verizon and sprint do the CDMA->CDMA1x->CDMA2000. There are a couple of different versions of both UTMS and CDMA2000 giving higher and higher speeds to data. As for which is more stable i'm not sure how you came out with CDMA is more stable. What do you mean by stable? Japan's DoMoCo has been using UTMS since about 2001 and they did have a few hickups when they first launch but it is running smoothly now. WCDMA and CDMA are not the same technology. These two paths are seperated by protocols. The TDMA->GSM path is the IS-136 protocal and that protocol includes WCDMA and UTMS. The CDMA path is under the protocol IS-95. Sprint has not been worki...

EDGE isn't for voice. EDGE is one of GSM's Data protocols. It replaces GPRS for data to give faster data. but the phones still use GSM for Voice.

They should have EDGE in many major markets before the end of the year, expanding to nationwide by the end of 2005.

Hey Rich, any idea what handsets might be on the horizon before the end of the year to take advantage of EDGE? They are releasing so many new handsets already right now that it's getting a little crazy.
