1) Use the trial period to insure you get coverage where you need it.
2) Find a phone that does what you NEED it to do.
3) Pick a plan that fits your needs.
4) Review your bill monthly and pay it on time.
5) Treat your phone like the expensive electronic equipment it is.
6) Expect to only get a discount on a new phone within the guidelines set forth by your provider.

Change number 6 to pay full retail and no contracts and you'll get me to agree 100% Seriously, it's time to do away with subsidies and contracts. I don't want to pay $200 per line just to go to another network if mine starts treating me the wrong way or doesn't meet my needs. I'd rather pay it up front in equipment costs.

The way I look at it is if the discount they provide me on the equipment is more than $200 than I come out ahead. Lets say they offer me a $300 full price phone free. Even if I cancel the second month and pay the $200 I have paid less, if the contract prorates and I cancel one year in and pay a $100 early termination fee than I have really paid less.

At T-Mobile you'll pay an additional $20 per month for the discount as well.
