Is the network name transmitted through the air or the network number is mapped to a net work name by the SIM?

I think T-Mobile and cingular use what's called "EONS" SIMs. EONS SIMs are engineered that they will always show the home "real" network. T-Mobile subscribers in California with older non EONS SIMs will see cingular rather than T-Mobile.
