when i renewed my contract i decided not to get a new phone. instead i passed my old phone to my wife since i was using an unlocked phone. she ported over from another provider.

i was told at the store i had to take a phone for the system to process so i picked a free phone.

i found out today that the free phone i took was counted as my upgrade.

so, did i misunderstood the whole phone upgrade process or did the person at the store processed everything wrong.

thanks!

when you get a phone for discounted price and renew your contract, it's considered as
    upgrade

um get your facts straight we don't get paid for free phones...and we are not always trying to sell a phone, you don't know he could have went to an indirect...you must clarify what you are trying to do when you ask for something...if you come into my store and tell you want to upgrade that tells me you want a new phone...if you want to change your rate plan then say "change my rate plan"...it sounds like the rep didn't dig further into what you really wanted but the latter part of retail does not do that

Actually, knightbang is correct. At a T-Mobile corp. store, reps DO NOT get paid commission on a free phone, we would only get paid for the activation, that's it.

Normally, as a rep, I tell customers that they can take advantage of the free phone since they will sign a contract anyway, but I'm always up front about that. If they do not want it, I don't force them to get the phone and give them a sim card. The problem is that customer think that if they don't get the phone now, they could get it later. They come back 5 months later and say they lost/broke their phone, and they say I didn't buy a phone when I activated, I only got a sim card. I told them they should have taken the free phone so they have a backup for something like this.

Your wife ported her number to T-Mobile? So that would hve been an activation. You get a free (or discounted) phone with an activation and it does not count as an upgrade to an existing line.

This is what took place. It was at a T-mobile store and not some kiosk.

I had a individual plan and it was up for renewal back in April. My wife had Verizon and was not happy. So she decided to port over and we renewed as a family plan.

I had an unlocked phone so I didn't get a new phone. I gave my old phone to her.

When it was time to ring up the bill I was told that we had to take a phone for the system to process it. So, we took a free phone that was on offer at the time.

I called customer service couple days ago thinking I still have an upgrade and was told the free phone was my upgrade. To be honest why would I chose a free phone as an upgrade?

Does any of this make any sense?

Thanks!

so you are stating that when you converted to a family plan, all you needed was a sim card for her new line...still kind of confused, being that an upgrade is for an existing line...i think you are stating that when you converted to a family plan that your line didn't need a phone, but the rep told you to choose so he can process it...if that is the case then yes, you were provided with wrong information, your contract would have extended since you switched your plan but that would have been it...wrong information was given but believe the rep did not make any money off of it, in regards to you getting a free phone.

yea the rep didnt make money of it it in the short run but in the long run yes. if he get a raise or something be sure that you were one of the ones to provide the raise because now you have a longer contract and more bills to pay.

I don't really care if the rep makes money off the phone or not.

I care about getting shafted out of my upgrade. I currently have a Nokia E65 why on earth would I even consider using some free Samsung phone as an upgrade?

Obviously I got shafted and maybe I need to call customer service to sort this out.
